Weekly Summary #2

Talk about a week where my brain felt fully juiced! Getting started with The Daily Creates was certainly difficult at first, especially having to be okay with creating art that wasn’t polished due to the time constraints. However, I found myself beginning to look forward to seeing what kinds of new things I would be asked to make each day. This doesn’t necessarily mean that I don’t still have trouble with TDC, though!

Along the same lines, I had a ton of fun creating my course character. I’m interested to see how our work with our characters will continue throughout the rest of the semester, as well as how they’ll interact with the class. The writing process was tough at first, but I got a lot of inspiration from a character name generator. It spit out “Bethany Smith (Smithy),” and I just had to make my character a good girl by day/mob boss by night with that kind of name! Being able to create a collage to further create a 3D person was quite fun as well! I haven’t done “creative writing” in years, so this was a welcome break from typical writing expectations.

I enjoyed my interactions with Dr. Oblivion, too. I find him a little unnerving, but I could say that about all AI! I think his voice adds another level to his persona, and I like being able to feed him prompts.

Looking back on this week, I know better how to manage my time in this class going forward. I think the first week of the semester spoiled me, and the workload this week surprised me. I also need to get in the habit of commenting on others’ posts, as I don’t feel like I did enough of that this week.

My Creative Journey: Week 2

Summary

This week was still a bit overwhelming due to the high amount of assignments given a week while I still have lots of homework and studying to do with my other classes, but I will admit that I am really proud of everything I accomplished this week. For someone that isn’t tech savvy at all I learned a lot and was impressed by how a lot of my creations came out. I am so happy that I was able to figure out how to customize my blog and make it look prettier. Now I love going onto my website Cinder’s Wonderland and seeing all the pretty details, and I feel a lot more confident while editing it now. Participation is still slightly confusing to me because I don’t know if I have to show proof of any comments I leave or will they be automatically noticed afterwards. Also this week for the first time I used Canva, contextualized hyperlinks with texts, made a poster digitally from scratch, etc. Most of it I was able to learn from Google and also video tutorials. I am still slightly worried about the weeks ahead since I am sure it is gonna become a lot more complicated when I have to make and edit videos and audio, which requires me spending more extra hours trying to figure everything out. But I am trying my best and I hope everyone appreciates all my effort and are enjoying looking at my creations.

New Discoveries and Experiences

  • Learned how to use Canva
  • Learned how to customize blog
  • Learned how to insert videos into blog posts
  • Learned how to link words to websites

Daily Creates

For the Daily Creates this week they were mostly simple and straightforward which I enjoyed, I feel like I spent more time trying to think of a fun idea to fit the prompts than the actual time spent on the creations, but the best part was seeing all my creations together in a post at the end of week. I also enjoyed seeing all the other ideas people come up with throughout the week in their posts. I go into a deeper dive of each of the Daily Creates I made on my post called Inside My Creative Mind.

Assignment Bank

This was my first week using the assignment bank and I will admit I was overwhelmed when I realized I had to create 3 of them, and not only that but 2 of them had to fit the cyberpunk theme which made it a little more complicated. It is very time consuming but the end results for my assignments came out really nice. For Young – The Anthem of a Corrupt Future I had to analyze song lyrics and write the meaning behind them. I chose the song Young by Hollywood Undead because it fit the cyberpunk theme because it is a song about living in a corrupt society. For Empire State of Love I had to make a contradicting poster so I used Canva for the first time. I used the cyberpunk theme for this as well by making the poster about advertising for being able to buy a robot lover in a futuristic New York City. Figuring out how to use Canva was pretty straightforward and I was amazed by how I was able to create a very detailed poster from scratch. Lastly, for Minecraft: Cherry Blossom Vacation Villa I had to create a house in the game called Minecraft. I already had prior experience with this game so building a house was fun and I loved being able to put all my ideas into it. I already did the cyberpunk theme for the other two assignments so this one I chose to use my own personal inspirations. Overall, I had fun with each assignment this week that I chose to make and I think the hours of effort I put into them were worth it.

Runa the Mercenary

Creating Runa was easy and fun! I already love making stories and characters so this was an enjoyable experience. I put a lot of thought into her personality, appearance, and storyline. I am assuming she is going to be used again later on this semester for another assignment, but for more information on Runa you can find her character’s profile on the post Meet Runa aka The Shadow.

Cowboy Bebop Review

I went back to my last week’s review on Cowboy Bebop and edited it to explain more about how cyberpunk was incorporated in the show’s theme in the final paragraph. You can find it on my post called The Thrilling Adventure of Cowboy Bebop

Inside My Creative Mind: Week 1

Caught Between a Coincidence

For this Daily Create I was trying to think of an interesting coincidence to make my post about, but while I was checking my calendar on my ipad I noticed that the date matched up exactly with the current time! So I rushed to get a picture of the funny coincidence of having the date be 1/20 and the time be 1:20.

Childhood Memory

For this Daily Create we were supposed to make bad art and everyone knows kid drawings tend to be . . . not perfect. So I decided to make a drawing similar to what I would have made in kindergarten which was the usual sun in the corner, a tree with a bushy top of leaves, birds above that look like funny flat letter m’s, tiny flowers, and lastly a cat with clearly off proportions but I think it makes it look more like a kid created it this way.

A Snowy Noblewoman

For this Daily Create I was supposed to catch a long shadow and mine came out elegantly. I was out in my jacket which lengthened into the appearance of a dress due to the angle of the sunset’s light. With the snowy background I think the picture came out nice because I look like a noblewoman traveling with one of those long dresses through a snowy field.

Happy Birthday, but Better

For this Daily Create we were celebrating ds106 radio’s birthday and were supposed to submit a birthday song. I chose the song that I love sending to my friends on their birthdays! It is really catchy and easy to sing along to so it was perfect to share with everyone. The beat is really good so if you would like to hear it yourself I included the song at the bottom of this post.

Who Needs Words for a Poem

For my favorite Daily Create of the week I had to make a poem out of emojis. Mine is a bit childish but I still think the silly idea was fun to create. I am not the greatest at poems so I tried to make mine rhyme for each line, and the inspiration behind it was from me staring at the snow outside and how I was warm indoors. The choice of emojis was the hardest because there definitely wasn’t enough ones to help portray my idea, especially for the last line where I chose the funny route of making a vampire represent the word bite.

Meet Runa aka The Shadow

Name: Runa Starr

Age: 22

Birthday: March 2, 2050

Occupation: Mercenary

Appearance: She’s only 5’2 but keeps a fit body to keep up in fights during missions. Even though she gets mistaken for a teen because of her baby-face Runa is actually 22. She has brown skin and keen eyes that match her recognizable smug smirk. Her flowing curly hair is rarely tied back into two puffs unless taking strolls through the city. Normally found wearing cloaks or oversized hoodies especially on missions to hide her identity.

Personality: An antihero to her core. Runa is known for her arrogance easily backed up by her skills. She’s really strategic, blunt, and headstrong. Normally prefers working alone so no one will drag her down, but secretly enjoys any acknowledgement from the rebellion’s leader when they’re paired up. Will never admit it but voice becomes high-pitched and squeaky when embarrassed.

Bio: In a world where the corrupt government executes citizens over the smallest crimes to keep them in order, Runa is out for vengeance after her parents were killed. She joined the rebellion called the Claws hidden in the part of Celeste City where crime runs wild without laws being enforced there. Her father was friend’s with the rebellion leader who took her in at a young age and trained her to fight. Now she’s known as The Shadow, a merciless mercenary who gets hired to take down her client’s targets one by one while slowly getting paid in info on government officials so she can avenge her parents.

Minecraft: Cherry Blossom Vacation Villa

When I need a break from my busy life I go relax in my Cherry Blossom Villa in Minecraft. Yes, you read that correctly, Minecraft. I created this beautiful pink home with a tranquil aesthetic in mind. From a gorgeous wrap around balcony on the top floor to the glass floors with a waterview. There’s intricate detail no matter where you look in this house and I am ready to explain every step of the way. So let the tour begin!

Material Used

  • Cherry Blossom Wood
  • Dark Oak
  • Glass
  • Sheared Cherry Blossom Leaves
  • Pink Glass
  • Cobblestone
  • Pink Carpet
  • Cherry Blossom Saplings
  • Dark Oak Stairs
  • Dark Oak Trap Doors
  • Dirt Blocks
  • Sandstone Block
  • Water Buckets
  • Flowers: Azure Bluet, Lilac, Lily of Valley, and Daisy

Elegant Entrance

Taking the first steps down my pretty pink path bordered by cobblestone, flowers, and cherry blossom trees, the first thing that catches your eyes in my frilly pink flower arches that greet you to enter. They give off nice spring vibes that give a grand entrance to the house. Before entering I’m sure you noticed the cute window boxes overflowing with cherry blossom saplings! They’re an adorable touch I included to the triangular windows. The home’s overall vibrant pink is a nice contrast to the villa’s dark wood border and roof, and let’s not forget the cobblestone foundation. But before heading in I want to add that the glass balcony overlooking the path above was made to resemble a vacation home, and even the flowers below were chosen in a neat pattern to look well manicured.

Gorgeous Foyer

Walking through the double doors the overall atmosphere screams ELEGANCE! The entire bottom level is an open layout with the balcony overlooking from the top. Dark wood frames the borders to give a nice finished look including the pillars. The whole floor is entirely glass with a pool of water beneath that’s sitting atop cobblestone. In the center lays a giant lush pink rug to make the glass floors pop out more.

Pink Paradise

Heading up stairs you are instantly hit with my favorite part of the house, THE CHERRY BLOSSOM CEILING! Yes! The entire ceiling is made completely out of cherry blossom leaves that drop pink petals on you as you go down the hall. The whole top floor is an open-air layout with a glass balcony view over the beautiful cherry blossom forest. It is a gorgeous sight whether looking at the house interior or outdoors. The floor is pink! The ceiling is pink! Even the walls are pink! Which is why I call it my pink paradise!

The Inspiration

Thanks for visiting my Cherry Blossom Villa! I hope you loved it as much as I do. I would also like to give thanks to Jonah Helbling for his post from the assignment bank called Back to Basics where he gave the idea of building a house in minecraft. He gave complete freedom to build your house any way you want so I chose to make mine cherry blossom themed. It was originally supposed to resemble a really girly dollhouse, but while building it I thought it would look prettier with more of a tranquil resort aesthetic which is how I ended up with this gorgeous pink creation!

Empire State of Love

In a world where you can now design your perfect companion, artificial love will steal your heart. This is the future where New York City is one of the first places to accept robo-lovers. If you want a funny boyfriend, you can have it! If want a athletic girlfriend, she’s all yours. There is over 24 enjoyable personalities to choose from to fit anyone’s lifestyle. Not only that, but you can customize your own robot to match the person of your dreams including height, body shape, voice, and even their interests. Owning a robo-lover is easy, just charge their battery while you sleep and by day you have endless hours of fun. So skip the hassle of dating and come to New York to get yourself a robo-lover.

The idea for this post was to showcase how ads like this might exist one day in the future if we keep advancing with technology. If you ever been to build a bear then you know how easy it is to make a stuffed animal, so imagine if in the future people could just walk in a store and create their own lovers. To me, this idea is insane and problematic. Not only would the cost be similar to owning a luxury car, but imagine the amount of people trying to find alternatives like stealing one for themselves or selling counterfeits. This leads to the cyberpunk theme of highly advanced robots becoming too normalized as crime begins to sky rocket. The use of robots would end up ruining relationships and destroy human social skills. If someone’s robo-lover ends up breaking or having an irreparable problem then wouldn’t the person still experience grief and depression from the loss due to their strong bond. Also don’t forget the type of people who would become addicted and end up owning multiple of them. Robo-lovers seems like an easy fix for people who struggle with dating but looking at the idea overall, it seems like the bad outweighs the good.

This post was inspired by Patricia Albert’s post in the assignment bank called Stay Home – Living is dangerous which was about making a graphic based on a theme with contradictory texts. For mine I chose to do the cyberpunk theme based on New York because Times Square with all its illuminated buildings already looks really high-tech. For my graphic I wanted to make it look like it was advertising something which is how I thought of the idea of robo-lovers. I used Canva for the first time to create it, and besides the amount of content locked behind a paywall, I think it was still useful. I learned how to create on it pretty easily and was able to find the images of a robot reaching for a humans hand oddly fast for my vision of this idea. Since it was based on finding love I made sure to add hearts especially to make the New York picture and the hands pictures above look connected. Lastly, I wanted to push more of the New York inspiration so I used the famous saying, “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,” because the advertisement is about being able to create your own dream lover in this high-tech problematic future. Also for those unfamiliar with New York sayings, this post’s title is also a play on the phrase, “Empire State of Mind.”

This Week Was All About Cherishing the Seasons, Wandering to Unimaginable Destinations, and Building Self Wealth. Also, I Can’t Wait for You All to Meet My Course Character Today. Cheers!

This week I chose a visual, a design, and a written assignment from the weekly assignment bank. I will also introduce my new course character, add some of my weekly adventures from the daily creates with my post and replies, and then give a brief summary of some of the new things that I learned this week.

I can feel and smell the seasons through the pictures!!!

The first assignment I chose was to make a visual collage of the 4 seasons: Winter, Fall, Summer, and Spring. I was drawn to this assignment because I absolutely LOVE the transition of all 4 seasons, and pictures of nature always amaze me. I wanted to use this assignment to start getting used to creating work that incorporates our class themes (Cyber punk and tech noir). I created the two collages using Canva. They are posted below in the order that I will write about them. Hopefully, you all will be able to tell the difference by their appearance!

First, I started searching for pictures of the four seasons that appeared to be normal or with no theme. I selected pictures that I felt we would see in real life. Or when we think of these seasons a picture like this will immediately pop into our heads. I then added them to my collage board and kept their original rectangular shapes and used no filters or editing tools to alter their appearance. Seasons are in this order for the first collage: Spring, summer, fall, and winter.

For the second collage, I chose another batch of seasonal photos that tended to have darker lighting with more intensified colors and are a little animated. For example, a themed photo I chose for the summer season has an animated human figure sitting at the beach. I intended for this picture to have some tech noir vibes to it with notes of cyber punk, while still representing a seasonal picture in my collage. That was really the process for all of the ones that I chose. I added the themed seasons in no correct order, I curved the edges of the pictures, and I added a little saturation to the pictures to make them look a bit more edgy. All in all, I wanted to show our seasonal reality versus a fun imaginative seasonal world with cyber punk and tech noir vibes. I hope you all can see my vision through these two collages! 🙂

Dooms-Dale Land.

For the second assignment, I decided to design a Destination Poster using Canva. My destination is of an imaginary place called Dooms-Dale Land that takes place in the heart of Cyber-Rome, Italy. Traveling to Italy has always been a dream of mine, so that’s why Italy was the inspiration for the setting of this technologically doomed place. I chose a few different pictures to put into this poster because I couldn’t choose just one of them. I researched cyberpunk/tech noir Italy, and these pictures popped up. I thought they were absolutely awesome and had to include them all. I cropped the pictures in a way that I could fit them all on the poster. Other than that, that is the only editing that was done to the pictures.

I used a multicolored background color that you can find on Canva using the linear gradient codes #8c52ff & #ff914d. This is the purple/pink/orange multicolored colors on the poster. I chose these colors because they looked appropriate for the setting. In most of the pictures, they have these colors incorporated in them. I used a “vintage” font with a hollow effect on the text. You can see the letters are slightly hollowed out. I chose this font/effect because I felt like it matched the vibe of the images. I looked through probably at least 15-20 font styles and I loved this one. I clicked on the hollow effect one time, and I didn’t even look for any other effects because I knew this one was it. Lastly, I finalized what I was going to say on my poster. At first, I kept it simple, and I wrote “Welcome to Dooms-Dale Land”, that name was a little random, but I felt like it went with the tech noir and cyber punk themes. Then I added the “Located in the heart of Cyber-Rome, Italy!” part. I thought it would be fun and on track with the theme to add Cyber-Rome, Italy instead of just saying located in Italy. Then I figured, why not add something nice at the end, in hopes to add suspense or something of the like. “We hope you enjoy your stay :)”. It’s almost the same effect as the creepy/scary chucky doll saying “you wanna play?”. Because who is “we” and from looking at the pictures, enjoying your stay may not be what will happen if you travel here. There seems to be a lot of technological warfare happening in these images.

Personal Wellness Check.

For my last assignment, I chose to do a Self-Wellness Check. Personal wellness is very important to me, and I think it is essential to occasionally do self-check ins to see where I’m at, what I’m thinking, and why I’m thinking it. Below are the questions that were asked in this assignment. I answered them as myself and this assignment was not themed like the other 2. Above I created a little poster to go along with the written assignment. I created it on canvas. I found a picture that I felt like represented self-wellness, and I added it and expanded it to the full size of the poster (11 x 17). Then I added a little text box below that says “Self care. Self love. Self-Health.” Below is the Q&A panel, questions first and then answers are below it with a bullet point.

What worries me most about the future?

  • I worry about what the world will turn in to. I’m worried that all my hard work (College, internship, jobs.) will only get my head above water, and I’ll never truly become stable to where I can enjoy a comfortable and a financially stress-free life that I create for myself. I fear that I will finish college and get a well-paying job but then I still can’t get ahead. I want to be able to have the work life balance and not have to work to live like I have seen other family members have to do.

What am I doing about the things that matter most in my life?

  • I am nurturing and watering the things that matter most in my life so they can continue grow. I care the most about my education, wellbeing, my partner, my family, my friends, and my community. I study and use my resources to do well in school. I nurture and respect my relationships with my partner, family, friends, and in my community. The hardest thing to do out of all of these sometimes, is to be nice and kind to myself and take care of my wellbeing. Although I do my best!

What do I want most in life?

  • I want stability, great health, to be well education, enjoy the work I do, and to live a life that I love. I’d love to own a home. I want a garden to grow fruits and vegetables. I also want to grow flowers.

When did I last push the boundaries of my comfort zone?

  • This is a great question. I’m unsure. I feel like the last time I truly pushed the boundaries of my comfort zone was when I switched jobs. I had been waitressing for 7-8 years and I QUIT! Shortly after I found an internship opportunity that has been life changing. Now to think about it. I want to push my boundaries of comfort again very soon!

What goals do I need to have to get where I want to be?

My goals:

  • Complete my last semester at UMW, graduate this May 25′, and apply for a permanent position at my internship.
  • I want to start working out again or taking yoga classes. Something to get me more active and stimulated.
  • Start saving money. Once I graduate college in May, I’ll have NO student debt. I paid all of it off while attending college. So, this will give me the opportunity to start actually saving the money that I make. I don’t have a specific savings goal yet.
  • Apply to attend graduates’ school to achieve my Masters. If I get offered the position at my internship, they will FULLY pay for me to get my masters. Then I’ll get another raise.
  • Be open to moving out of my apartment. I’m scared to move because I’m comfortable here. I feel safe and secure because I know I can afford it because it is cheap/cheaper than anywhere else I’ve seen in the current market. But I want to keep an open mind about moving or relocating. I don’t want to be scared to make a move if it will benefit me.

Daily Create Shenanigans!

This week was the start of my Daily Creates #ds106 #DailyCreates

First of all, I have 3 followers already!!! How exciting?!

For the first DC #tdc4754 (Daily Create) I sent in my secret spy weapon. Which was a picture of a watch, I’ll repost the picture below. I got my inspiration from James Bond, and many other agents. In my caption I said, “Every agent needs a watch!”

My second DC #tdc4755, I sent in captcha humor/sarcasm. On canvas, I created a collage with about 8 different humorous memes or images that I found on the internet. I added them into the collage, and I cropped and edited the memes/images, so they fit in square or rectangular form on the page, almost how a normal captcha would look like. Then I added a text box and posted a caption on the collage that said, “Select all squares with captcha humor”. Image below:

Third DC, #tdc4756 We were supposed to make some kind of art about unexpected coincidences. I created a blank canvas on Canva and found a meme about the coincidence of eating Pie on Pi Day. I also added a caption: “The pie also cost $3.14… Wicked!! A coincidence, I think NOT!” Image posted below:

Fourth DC, #tdc4758Take a photo of yourself in the first or last light of the day, so your shadow is as tall or as long as possible. I took a photo of my shadow while I was walking to class on campus around 9:15am. I’ll add the image below.

The last DC for this week! #tdc4760 Create an emoji poem. I found a meme emoji poem that I had to share. It had a bunch of waves, ice cubes, whales, dolphins, boats, and one ship; At the very top right corner it says, “Jack No”. I love the titanic and I thought this was pretty creative way to represent that movie/story. I replied to myself on my post and wrote “Titanic Emoji Poem” just to clarify what the empji poem was about.

Image posted below:

Lastly, each day for our Daily Creates I favorited ones that I was able to see. Everyone else in my class did a great job this week! I made one reply to another student that said “This is awesome! Nice post rylie!” I’m still getting the hang of using these platforms. Next week I plan to make more comments and replies to other classmates.

Dr. Oblivion; Film Review with The Postman

The Terminator

Last week I watched the film The Terminator. From the previous readings, I had already known that some themes of this film were going to be tech noir and cyberpunk. I asked Dr. Oblivion, “What other themes besides tech noir and cyber punk were in the move The Terminator?” His response gave me a deeper insight on some of the deeper themes that I had overlooked. Of course, AI, dystopia, fate/destiny, and time travel are all themes that I had caught onto. But the idea of humanity and empathy, what it means to be human, and the idea that certain events are meant to happen and with changing them creates another set of problems. Then I asked Dr. Oblivion, “What does it mean to be human?” He replied that being human means that we feel emotions, have our own thoughts, we are conscious and aware of ourselves and our surroundings. Humans can also create things that don’t already exist. I had never really thought about what it means to be human.

In Chapter 1 of the Towards Technopoly: The Judgement of Thamus, ““Every technology is both a burden and a blessing”, “therefore, whatever our tendency — to praise or to curse — we should avoid becoming “one-eyed prophets.”” It makes sense that One-eyed prophets are not to be seen clearly. There are many external factors that cannot be accounted for. For example, the behaviors of people are most times unpredictable. We can’t account for the actions of other people because you cannot ever be certain of it. This also ties into the Statement of non-neutrality. Technology is not neutral. There are many pros of using innovative technology – it is used to create and transform but with that comes with many consequences. Just because an innovation is good, and it holds value, and dignity doesn’t mean it always will be and could cause disruption. Competition, dominance, money, attention, and intention is always subject to change and take discourse. I resonated with the concept of who are the winners and who are the losers of this technology? Who will gain power, dominance, money, and control? Who will suffer poverty, hardship, and defeat? In The Terminator, Skynet was originally created for unmanned military use and then became so powerful it became evil, and humans could not unarm it. In this case, humans would have been the losers.

In chapter 3, Towards Technopoly: From Technocracy to Technopoly, the Postman talks about unlimited growth. Which is relevant to The Terminator. Skynet, the created invention by Sarah Connor’s son became incredibly dangerous to humans and would have caused a nuclear death of the masses. This creation was not improving the condition to humanity and had widely caused disruption. This idea of technocracy had created new freedoms and accelerated life but also became the root of evil and triumph. From the reading, “With every new invention some limit was lifted or alleviated and there was less temptation to look back.” The Terminator was sent to look back in time to kill Sarah’s son to eliminate the new limitless technology, including; Limitless possessions, knowledge, science, and progression – good or bad. In this case bad because it was leading to violence, waste, war, and destruction. It also minimized the respect, reverence, responsibility, accountability, and self-subordination for those in power in the future. Which would have AI, robots, and of the sort.

“Technopoly is water we swim in, which is why it’s critical for the flourishing of our local and global community that we know what it means to be wet.”, a quote from ch.3 readings from the Postman. This movie is the perfect example of why humans have to be careful and cautious of new technological creations as they can become dehumanizing.

It was lovely to meet Dr. Oblivion this week and read through Postmans Towards Technopoly pieces. Learning how powerful technology is, what type of effects it can have, and the ideologies behind it was very interesting and I took a lot from it.

Final Thoughts:

This week I got to participate with my classmates through the daily creates. I also had the opportunity to explore and pull out my creative side through the assignments that I chose. I also got to play around with word press and find out how to create tags, insert media, design my writings in my post, and even more.

Over the weekend I’ll be going to the DKC again to dive a little deeper on how to work with word press and how to better format my work on my post. Overall, I think I did a great job on week 2 assignments and activities! My work can only get better and more creative from here!

Young – The Anthem of a Corrupt Future

Young by Hollywood Undead

Nothing screams rebellion more than a rock song about revolting and making a change in the world. As technology advances and the world becomes more futuristic, the predictable downside is how the wealth gap will grow making those in power only stronger while the rest of the world is left to suffer. The energy of this song is passionately strong and flowing with rage as it speaks to the younger generation to open their eyes and fight back for their future. I personally think this is the perfect anthem for a cyberpunk world falling apart at its seams. The song emphasizes their struggles of being young and unfairly born in a dystopia. Having to fight for survival while watching others unethically die. The inspiration of the lyrics are overflowing with detail so lets take a deeper dive.

The song Young is about Hollywood Undead’s perception of the current generation and how they have the power to change the world in any way they want, according to Genius. The song starts out strong with, “We are young, but we have heart. Born in this world as it all falls apart. We are strong, but we don’t belong. Born in this world as it all falls apart.” The songwriter puts clear emphasis on the pain of being new to the world and already having the perspective of living in unbearable conditions. It is summed up as a world where you have to adapt just to survive.

In the first verse the song continues now pointing out the cause. They figuratively bring up the joy of children minds before they truly open their eyes to the twisted world around them. These same children see the corruption overtime. The use of the words “hate” and “hatred” are repeated to show how division is used amongst society. How the enemy, those in power, are causing all the pain and purposely oppressing people. The words hit home with their final line, “Medication for the kids with no reason to live.” Showing that their world’s corruption is so bad that even the children who need help already gave up on themselves.

The second verse focuses on the shift to fight back. Their once beautiful worldview is now tainted and the song tells them to stand up and make a change. The pain and frustration in the singers voice for the ending lines are done so well as they point out they never wanted all this. They never wanted all this hatred and fighting. They were just born in a world where it was the only way to survive. A corrupt world that takes the innocent hearts of children and turn them into merciless monsters who don’t have a choice.

The ending is what really ties the whole purpose of the song together nicely. It is repeated over and over that no matter what they will not stop fighting for change. For a better future. Even if the rebels, the children who were once innocent and carefree, die during this fight they still won’t give up. The push is until they can have heaven on Earth or be freed by the angels above.

I also would like to give credit to Madeline Hays for the inspiration behind this because of her post in the assignment bank about how does a song make you feel. These song lyrics were formed in the early 2000s as a call to action for the youth to rise up and fight back for a better future. We are currently now living in the future that they were warning us about and I believe the song could still apply to certain aspects of society now. But with how fast technology is advancing, Young could easily turn into a song about our world being a cyberpunk dystopia. That is when I believe it will truly become the anthem of a corrupt future.
