Last week of Daily Creates

Since I will be putting a lot of focus on my final project and trailer for the last couple weeks of the semester, I may not be doing a ton of daily creates or any at all , especially since they’re optional.

I really have had a lot of fun every week doing daily creates and just training my brain not to perfect every assignment especially when it comes to the more creative assignments.

This week I did 3 creates, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On Monday The prompt was to find/create a unique question mark. I found this really pretty almost water color, vibrant question mark. You can check it out here:

For Wednesday, the prompt was to describe or show a photo of what you would find behind a peculiar, aged, blue wooden door. This is what I think you’d find behind the door:

Finally for Friday the prompt was to show something that has an ironic name. I immediately thought of one of my favorite cartoons I used to watch when I was a lot younger, where one of the characters has a very ironic name. Check it out here:

Overall I think it was a fun week of daily creates. We’ll see if these are the last of the semester, I might make time to do a couple in the coming weeks.

See you next week,

sincerely, Kristen

Listening To DS106 Radio Shows RULE

During week 11, I got to have a wonderful Radio Listen Experience, have some fun with daily creates, and start planning for my final project.

My radio show experience consisted of tuning into Noir News’s radio show and tuning into my own (Fearless Femmes). They were both wonderful to listen to and it always feels so cool to listen to myself and my classmates airing live.

I loved how everyone had the freedom to be creative and make their shows what they wanted. It was so cool to see and hear how incredibly different our show content was about but also very interesting to see things that we did similarly. Like using robotic or monotone sounds and things like that.

I also took the time to reflect on my own work in the radio show. I want to work on not depending on a script so much, steer away from talking too fast, and keeping my voice alive and not going monotone when reading from my script. I think I would sound better and more natural if I wasn’t focusing so hard on-going word for word on my script.

Here’s my Daily Create Shenanigans from Week 11! I completed 3 this week; Topics were about April Fools Jokes, Narnia, and Irony!

Lastly, the fearless femmes group decided to continue to work together on our final project. We have been brainstorming ideas and narrowing our focus. I’m very excited to work with them again.

Happy Friday Everyone!

Noir Games? More Like Yes Games!

I listened to Noir Games, which aired after my group’s radio show. One of the things that struck me most about this show was their use of computereized voices as well as a cloned Dr. Oblivion! I was really impressed that the creators of this show were able to convey such emotion and personality through voices that were clearly not human. I did find it a bit confusing trying to figure out who was talking at a couple of points, but overall I think their format was effective.

The balance of all the voices was great, and it was so neat that stero was used and that different voices were coming from different sides of a table. The sound effects were jarring at first, but ultimately ended up working well with the show.

I haven’t been exposed to any radio-game-shows, but it was very enjoyable! I think it was a clever way to tie in the tech-noir theme and jokes without feeling like they were putting a hat on a hat. Through this class and one of my other classes, I’m realizing how hard it is to engage with futuristic themes without making it feel like a cheesy sci-fi movie, so I commend Noir Games for that.

In terms of listening to my own group’s show, Days of Crime and Roses, I don’t have as much to say. It was a lot of fun to have a somewhat synchronous experience with the other folks in this class, and I love getting feedback, so lurking on Discord was great. I was more critical of things hearing it over the air than I was listening to it on my laptop, but I think more of that has to do with the public setting rather than the actual radio. It was neat to get to go on air with Rebecca and talk about our process a bit!

This post is doubling as my Weekly Sumamry, so as always, The Daily Creates.

Daily Create Shenanigans – Week ELEVEN

I complete 3 daily creates this week! I’ve posted the links to my posts on Mastodon below.

DC #1: April Fools Day Jokes

A classic April Fools Joke:

DC #2: Where does this door open up to?

IT OPENS UP TO NARNIAAAAAA.

DC #3: Irony

Ironically Named Or Name It Ironically. I chose this for my daily create – partially because it made me giggle and also because the other one that I found HILARIOUS may have been deemed as inappropriate or controversial LOL so I settled for this one, still funny and ironic though!

Radio Listen Experience

I tuned into the Noir News radio show on Wednesday @ 8:00pm. I was driving in the car, and I had put it on the radio. Unfortunately I could not follow the discussion on discord because I was driving.

First, I want to say great job to the Noir News cast members! I had to remember that the news wasn’t “real” news I guess you could say haha! Overall I thought their transitions were great, content was cohesive, and the show was interesting!

I liked that the PSAs, commercials, and the topics were realistic as if they were the real news stories with that futuristic twist to it. The content was consistent with information that seemed informative for the setting, and news/weather related. I thought it was pretty cool that there wasn’t much coordination between the cast members before recording and everyone kind of chose their story to present on the show. It made it interesting, it wasn’t repetitive, and I think it gave everyone individuality in this group project.

I was also pretty intrigued from the robotic sounds or monotone narration for some of the show. It seemed especially appropriate for the PSA telling everyone that police recommend people to stay in their houses and to not follow/go into the tunnels, especially if they see robots walking in pairs into the tunnels. The sound effect made it sound very serious, intense, and suspenseful.

The topics were really creative as well; Stuff happening on mars, robotic dogs, academic enhancements that corrupted Sarah’s brain, and the danger of robots.

Great job Noir News! Thanks for being my entertainment during my long drive home.

Listening to my own radio show (Fearless Femmes)

I had already listened to it after the final editing had been done but hearing our groups final work air live on a radio station is a really cool experience! It made me proud of my group all over again, made me giggle at times, and also made me reflect on some things I would like to work on for future assignments.

Personally, I’d like to work on my radio voice, I noticed I was speaking really fast at times or my voice lost some life/went a little monotone  because I was reading from my script.

We did have some technical difficulties so Martina wasn’t able to talk much about the process of the radio show & editing but we tried to give that info in discord. Having that discussion in discord and getting feedback from other students was awesome too!!

My radio show experience was lovely.

Thanks DS106.

Week 11 Summary

This week I met with the girls who I worked with on the radio show to discuss the final, we all agreed that we would like to work with each other and so we met on Wednesday. At first we were a little lost as to how we would accomplish the final and what we wanted to do and what we had the capacity to do. After a lot of discussion we came to the conclusion that we would make a show that was similar to the real house wives but set it in a tech noir city. After we came up with that idea we started to come up with other ways we could include our character and how we wanted to film. I think we will use the HCC for our filming location because there are green screens and other large areas that we can manipulate to make our show seem more authentic. We have agreed to film on Monday and we are working on a script in the meantime.

This week I also had the opportunity to listen to my radio show on air which was a cool experience. Listening to the radio show on air made me happy that we were able to fit all our pieces into one and actually have a successful show. I enjoyed being able to interact with people in the discord and give them a bette understanding of how the show came together.

Another show I listed to was Noir Games which was great, I liked how everything flowed tighter but was also rigid in a robotic way which went with the tech noir theme. I think everyone in the group did a great job with coming up with ideas.

Lastly I did the daily creates, which made me dig into the back of my brain a little more than usual but was still a therapeutic activity.

My Creative Journey: Week 11

Summary

This week was just days of relaxing and enjoying all the effort put into the earlier weeks for our radio show project. It was fun being able to listen to everyone’s shows play live on the radio and I loved getting to experience having a bunch of people see my show! For more details on my experience you can go to my post called Lights! Camera! Action! I also completed three Daily Creates which can be found on my post called Inside My Creative Mind.

Lights! Camera! Action!

Radio Show Experience!

Noir Games Radio Show

It was so fun being able to see my own creation play live on a radio and it is definitely an experience that I will never forget! I put a lot of effort into Noir Games so I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments and compliments on Discord. I’m happy that everyone appreciated the sarcastic lines of the characters so much, especially the ones written for Dr. Oblivion because those were my favorite too. I am assuming this is how producers feel when they finally get to reveal their shows, movies, etc after weeks of work. I was not able to talk live on the radio due to complications with a noisy background because of my family, but I was able to still answer various questions through Discord text on the process of creating the radio show and the thought process behind the choices my group and I made for it which was nice to experience. If anything, after listening to Noir Games play on the radio I wish more background music was edited in to make it sound more like a game show. Also maybe more sounds of an audience reacting in the crowd to make it sound more realistic.

Spotlight: Fearless Femmes!

Fearless Femmes Radio Show

I was also able to experience listening in on the other radio shows presented but the one I want to put a spotlight on is Fearless Femmes! I enjoyed listening to their show a lot! It sounded like a realistic gossip talk show and there was a lot of funny moments like the story about the person who found out their boyfriend was a robot. I think it was a good idea that they used their actual voices to record instead of ai because it made it feel more personal and relatable when they would share their stories. Also the use of the telephone ringing every time there was a new caller was a good transition sound for telling the audience a new person’s story was about to be introduced each time. I also don’t want to forget mentioning their intro, commercials and radio bumpers which also sounded pretty realistic and very detailed. Overall, this group put a lot of work into their radio show and if it was real I probably wouldn’t mind tuning in to listen to more funny episodes!

Inside My Creative Mind: Week 11

April Fools!

For this Daily Create it was April Fools Day themed so I showed a prank that I did to my friends. I created a fake account to look like a stranger with the name Bo and pretended like I knew my friends to get their funny reactions.

Deciphering Gone Funnily Wrong

For this Daily create I was supposed to try to decipher a page from an old book. For my page it looked like they were having fun in water so I added speech bubbles with the text “The first ever pool party!” and “What a jolly good idea!”

Just as Confused as You

For this Daily Create I was supposed to show an ironic photo so I chose a picture of Iceland because it has the word ice in it but the country itself is mostly grassy land so it is kind of funny and ironic.
