Weekly Review

This week was the week of January, 15th, 2024- January, 19th, 2024. This week I learned a lot in all of my new courses but especially so in my Digital Studies course. This week I set up my Domain, registered it, and even posted. I learned how to set links for buttons on my home page and how to customize my blog! I still have more to learn but I am excited to learn more about how I can be a creator online and how to tell my story better.

Setting up my domain took the longest amount of time, and it really was frustrating learning how to use new software. At first, I couldn’t find a name for my site and I spent an hour researching what I could do to make a name click for me. Then after I found a site name it was taken and I had to find another site name that was similar and available. After setting up my domain, and registering it with the school and the course blog, the real work began. I had to download things and watch a lot of YouTube tutorials to even get started.

I created a look for my blog that I absolutely love as a base and look forward to tweaking it to make it better later also how this is a space for me to show my thoughts even though it is for a grade at the moment. For a while, I couldn’t figure out how to edit blog posts and tried editing them on the website editing page, but then finally I saw the blog posts button on my dashboard. After I learned how the software works, I enjoyed everything about setting up my blog. Below you can find the blog posts that I worked on this week!

This week’s Work at a glance:

The Creator- A review

Goals for Digital Studies.

Goals for Digital Studies

I was asked what do I want out of this Class and to be honest, I don’t know. I am taking this class to fulfill a general education requirement but I am also enjoying what the class is going to help me learn even in the first week.

Here are some goals that I want to set for myself

  1. Be more flexible with the programs and software that I use,
  2. Learn how to convey messages better
  3. Be more open to others’ thoughts, and improve from them.
  4. How to convey my creative process

These are all that I have now but of course, they are subject to change!

The Creator- A review

The Creator came out last year and is by far my favorite Ai movie. The Creator is a movie about a soldier in the future who goes undercover in Asia, where they are cohabitating with AI lifeforms against America’s wishes. He is undercover in Asia because he is on a mission to find the creator of higher Ai or Nirmata. He is sent to marry a woman who is believed to be the daughter of Nirmata and ends up falling for her and impregnating her. Late in the pregnancy an accident occurs and she and the child are believed to be dead, so when the soldier returns to Asia in a later mission he is shocked to see evidence of his wife being alive and this sends him on a hunt to find her. On this hunt, he finds a child with the capabilities to shut down a ship that threatens the lives of many Ai lifeforms and the people that they cohabitate with.

The ship’s name is the NOMAD and is an American-owned spacecraft that sends focused beams that kill anything that they land on. Eventually, he finds his wife and shuts down the ship in an attempt to save the people in Asia. This movie exposes us to an alternate future reality where some cultures are tolerant of what Ai will become. The AI machines are lifelike and seem to present real emotions.. one of the instances being an AI robot watching a stripper Ai robot on a hologram and imitating a typical guard with a cigarette. Instead of the traditional approach that gives the impression that we should be scared of Ai, and Ai is the” end of the Human Race”, we find ourselves in an alternate future reality where cohabitation with Ai is possible.

The situations that play out in this movie are somewhat realistic, in the sense that I can see America framing someone else for something that they did as an excuse to wage war on foreign land. I can also see inter-species relationships potentially playing out, as well as some other small details in the movie. This movie gives a new perspective to what AI can bring as opposed to the view that we typically get of writers only wanting to show the bad side. Overall, the movie’s cinematics were amazing, and the storyline kept me engaged the whole time.

Course Goals / Initial Thoughts

What I expect to get out of this course… To be honest I feel that it has already changed a few times. Initially I just wanted the credits so I could move on to more major focused courses, but now I think since it is flexing my creative muscles, I am excited to dive deeper. My life and career have been focused on “what is the right decision” or “what is the most logical” or “what is the most lucrative” and not ever just letting me freely explore what I want or feel and express it. Yes, these questions are necessary to reach and maintain the quality of life you desire, but sometimes you have to just express yourself and discuss the process not the result. This class has already given me the freedom to talk about how things make me feel and what I think of them without an actual desired outcome. The outcome is whatever it ends up being…. which is wild when I say it out loud.

I was the most stressed for this course compared to my others because of the hefty week one start up, but I have already realized that the workload is more fun and fluid than I initially thought. I am genuinely excited to see where this class takes me, and maybe I will learn about something I didn’t even know existed, and it becomes one of my new favorite things.

So, what do I want out of this class? I want to discover and learn how to use creative tools to better express myself and hopefully along the way hit those ALPP outcomes. Also, I just want to enjoy the ride. AI and Machine learning are fascinating worlds, and I am ready to learn more.

Weekly Summary 📅:

ds106 BootCamp is a fitting name for this week. I took one task at a time and was thrilled when I could check each item off of the list! I set up the password management on Bitwarden, using it takes a little getting used to because it takes another step, but it is much safer, so I am glad to have it now. Editing my website so that it looks more professional has not been fast. I read the instructions on WordPress, but after clicking on Appearance, other themes were not there to choose from, that may mean a visit to the DKC to improve it. I would like to delete the buildings on the sample page. In order to brand my website, I thought about what image I would like as a header. I played around on BeFunky with different editing aspects and with two different photos. In the end, I really liked one of me with my dog done in a Watercolor edit.

Weekly Summary: Week One (DS106)

Although I joined this class a few days late I really enjoyed what I have done so far. When I was younger I enjoyed using Shopify and Printify to drop ship a clothing brand I created. The website making from those projects I had as a child really has helped me so far. I have always liked writing down and sharing my thoughts and ideas and this is a great opportunity for that. Since I joined this class late I have crammed in the work for this week as we are quickly approaching the deadline. Something that bothered me about making the websites were the nonstop verification emails sent to me. I know verifying people are real is very important but it prolongs the process by a long shot.

Goals!!

I registered for this class because as a psychology major, there are no digital intensive classes within the major, so I had to find something outside of the major. In high school, I worked closely on our school’s yearbook along with the editors, so storytelling is very important to me.

I really like this idea that everyone has a story to tell. Our world is too diverse for us to all have the same story. Maybe stories can be the similar, but never the same.

I also like the idea that this world is so digital that anyone can hear your story, no matter where you are. Which is, ultimately, why I’m here.

As for goals, I want to learn more about the different ways to tell those stories digitally, figure out what options could be better for this type of story, or this other story, and so on. I’d also like to keep myself in check and actually reflect on my work instead of doing it and forgetting about it. I just really want to learn.

One final thing, I’m a little uncomfortable with AI, it makes me feel uneasy, so my final goal is to become at least a little more comfortable with AI. It’s getting to a point where there really is no hiding from it, so I think I had better start getting over my discomfort with it.

Weekly Summary

I enjoyed this week setting everything up. Absolutely everything was 100% new to me so it was a bit of a challenge and I had to visit the Digital Knowledge Center to set most of it up. Navigating WordPress was probably the most challenging for me to get a hold on, but I’ve got a decent grip on it now after a couple days. I learned how to create a domain, subdomain, and make new posts and pages on WordPress. The easy part of this week for me was being able to watch a movie for schoolwork. This past year I really fell in love with cinema and having this be the first assignment made me look forward to actually having fun doing schoolwork, which is rare. I truly wish all teachers would do more like that. I also enjoyed getting to mess around with WordPress. My posts will surely start off basic but I’m looking forward to advancing my posts as the weeks go on. Nonetheless, I’m not very technological as I’m off social media and stay off my phone as much as I can so setting up this stuff was a burden, but the reward seems like it will be worth it.

Film Review: The Creator

For this assignment I revisited a film that came out last year in 2023 that was personally one of my favorites of the year. It stars John David Washington, Denzel Washington’s son, who is a soldier in the future after artificial intelligence has detonated a nuclear bomb in the US. Since then, people have betrayed AI and only the people of a place called New Asia support its existence. Mr. Washingtons character, Joshua, is on an undercover job in New Asia with his pregnant wife who is believed to be the daughter of the mastermind of the AI technology that has caused this international turmoil. The purpose of the undercover mission is to discover where the new weapon they’ve created is at. Later in the movie we find out that the new weapon is in the form of a child, specifically Joshuas and his wife’s child, who is called Alphie. Instead of destroying Alphie, Joshua risks his life and eventually gives it to protect Alphie.

I enjoyed the religious parallels of this movie as Joshuas wife, Maya, is seen as a Virgin Mary character who mothers what the world sees as something destructive but actually possesses the power to save it. Also, the simplicity, but directness and power of the title. AI is displayed in a godly way as being so powerful it controls humans which is a potential reality in our world. I think the real warning of AI is greatly portrayed in this film as it, along with technology and science, can replace the abstract thinking of humans. This of course is a deep internal threat to where the origin of the movie’s plot being the AI dropping a nuclear warhead is something to objectively worry about. For all it takes it one technical mistake or a slight increase of autonomy to a system to create a world of regret. Therefore, I think AI can be used in helpful ways to us, but “should it” is the question of high consequential thinking and even morally difficult to navigate.

Film Review

When I found out we had to watch a film that used AI I was very excited. I chose to watch Iron Man because I am a huge fan of Marvel Movies. I had not gotten to watch a movie in a while so I was glad that this gave me the opportunity too. Although I have seen this before, this time I got to look at the film throufh a different view. The use of AI is very interesting and it is cool to see where exactly the creators chose to use it. In the movie JARVIS is the AI system that Stark created himself. This AI is used as his personal assistant that helps him analyze data and provide information to Stark.

Overall, this movie was a great way to see how AI is being incorporated into film, and the digital world.
