Week 9 summary

This week was a busy one in the world of ds106 I created multiple project that will hopefully be useful when creating our final draft. To begin I created a commercial for our upcoming Noir games podcast with help from the good ole doc. Next I created a intermission for our radio show that reminds the viewer to get outside touch some grass and get a breath of fresh air, then I created a Noir games logo using canva which originally I didn’t like but after some much needed editing have grown to quite enjoy. To conclude the week we were responsible for 3 daily creates this week which I was able to get done: the first was at list something that confused us, next I punch-carded a part of the Danny Phatom theme song one of my favorite shows from my childhood, and to end the week I attempted to copy the famous Italian opera singer Giuseppe De Luca pose and was successful but the picture says otherwise.

Daily creates:

  1. The first daily creates of the week was post something that shows what confusion means to us personally, and it instantly clicked in my head. The random dress that had the entire world confused on which color it was was a perfect example, not only did this confused me but it confused almost everyone who came across it causing for explanation videos to be made just to gather some understanding of what was going on.
  2. Next I created a punch card using an phrase, and I saw my group mate cinder decided to do part of the sponge Bob intro so I took inspiration from that and did another nickelodeon show Danny Phantom which was one of my childhood favorites.
  3. To end the week I attempted to copy a pose from the famous Italian opera singer Giuseppe De Luca and passed unsuccessfully as I was able to make and hold the pose for a moment, but when I attempted to look at the timer on the camera I lost my balance and fell just as the phone snapped the picture.

Week 9 Summary

This week had a heavier workload compared to last week. Working on the radio show has been a bit stressful in terms of timing, but I’m confident it will all come together just fine. On the bright side, the Daily Creates were really enjoyable, and I had a lot of fun with them this week.

This week’s summary will be brief in terms of details, but rest assured that the work is complete, and I put effort into each assignment. Looking forward to sharing our final show with you next week!

Assignments Completed for the Radio Show:

Audio Assignments:

Week 9

This week was mainly full of comunication between the group and trying to figure out what direction we wanted to go with the show. We eventallu came up with a idea everyone agreed on and proceeded to create a outline with script.

The audio assignment were pretty simple and i completed them by using soundcloud and a soundcloud downloader to turn the soundcloud link into a downloadable file. Also for the Spooky season assignemnt i used a audio editing software to shorten and put the sound clips together.

The daily created were pretty easy I found thursdays one with the digital punchcard based off of what message was type was pretty interesting.

Weekly Summary- 3/21

This week was a good start to our radio show project, the first of the bigger projects of the class. Talking to my group went pretty smooth, communicating over discord and settling on a concept for our show and a plan for how to execute that concept. We made an outline and script for our show, making room for commercials and bumpers. This week I also created a promo poster for our show, as well as 2 audio assignments. I used those assignments to create an Aquaphor commercial for the show, using audacity to layer sounds to give additional effects. For my second audio assignment, I used audacity again to create a transition between clips to have something different than a bumper but similar enough that it would flit in. Using my time and effort to create these will help smoothen the process in creating the show come next week.

Outside of those assignments, I did my 3 daily creates this week which are listed under here as has become usual.

7 Did What?? – Week 9 Summary

Get it? Because 7 ate 9. A joke is always funnier when you have to explain it.

I mentioned this in my Radio Show Progress report but the audio assignments have been my favorite part of the class, so I really enjoyed returning to them this week. It was also nice meeting with my groupmates this week to discuss our show and I think we’re all doing a good job. I’m excited to see what the finished product looks like.

Daily Creates

This week I did Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday’s Daily Creates.

Monday’s Daily Create was asking how we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Other than wearing green, I don’t have any traditions so I shared a video that I had seen Monday Morning to spread the St. Patty’s Day spirit. The video is a Disney Pixie Hollow Short about fairies who use the end of a rainbow as a slide. It’s a cute video that I thought others would appreciate. You can see the post here.

The next Daily Create was “What Does Confusion Look Like?” I put a twist on the prompt and put in a picture of what confusion feels like to me. When I’m confused, it’s like I’m hearing the words but they’re not registering in my brain. When I was making the post, I wanted to make it clear that the words are going in one ear and out the other but I’m trying to comprehend them. I used Canva to make this post. I took a stick figure sticker and a line from my math notes to put through the figure’s ears. I also took a scrambled letters picture and put it on the figure’s head to show what he was thinking.

The last daily create I did was creating a message with a punch card. My message said “Everything is Not as it Seems,” which is the title theme song from Wizards of Waverly Place. I was inspired by Wizards of Waverly Place because I loved it when I was a kid, and I noticed that when you clicked on the punch card website, the address it lists as an example is located in Waverly Place, New York.

Comments

At the beginning of the week I found it difficult to find things to comment on, but as the week went on it got easier. I started the week by commenting on Cinder’s Daily Create talking about their St. Patrick’s Day tradition, I commented “That’s such a sweet tradition. I love that you kept it alive so many years later.” I thought it was so nice that they had kept up a tradition that has beenn around since they were a kid. I won’t lie, I’m a bit envious that there were so many cool traditions that people had for St. Patrick’s Day, I guess my family is lame. The next post I commented on was Ryee’s DC for the Confusing Picture Prompt. They posted a picture about the upcoming MCU movies saying that they are too confusing now, and I completely agreed. I said, “This is so real, and the sad thing is it’s not even good anymore. I had no problem watching all the movies until No Way Home, and I loved WandaVision and Hawkeye. It’s too much mediocre content and it’s coming out too fast.” I was a big Marvel fan, and when I rewatch the older projects I remember why I loved it, but I feel like they are focusing on quantity over quality and I miss the old movies. The next thing I commented on was the video promo by Sincerely, Kristen. Kristen is in my group so I was excited to see the promo she came up with, and I thought it came out good. I commented, “This came out so good! I love the flashy transitions and the music in the background. I think this promo is a great reflection of our show and the content we’ll produce.” In the video description, Kristen said she used Canva templates to make the video which is something I can relate to because I like the transitions on Canva since they’re so easy to apply. The next post I commented on was Noir You Didn’t’s Design Project, I thought they did a good job of capturing the TechNoir essence. I said, “I like the broken hearts. They’re not the signature broken hearts, and they look like glass hearts that a bullet shot straight through. I know you said you wanted to reflect the TechNoir theme, and I think the black, broken hearts add to it.” I thought their design promo was a good example of what a podcast promo should look like. The last thing I commented on was Alewis22’s Daily Create where they posted for the Confusing Picture prompt, they posted the black/blue or gold/white dress. I said, “Similar to this, have you seen the pink or teal shoe? I can see both, but apparently, it’s supposed to say something about your brain.” I’ll leave a picture of the shoe for those interested. I enjoyed commenting this week because I feel like I normally comment on the same people’s posts, but this week I was able to break out of that bubble.

They say if you see pink and white, you’re right brain dominant, and if you see blue and grey, you’re left brain dominant

Radio Show

My progress for the radio show is going well. I was working hard to create some quality work for this show. The first thing I made was the advertisement. The advertisement assignment took the most time to craft, because I had to create a product and a script for ad but once I had everything recorded it was very easy and quick to make. The next thing I made was the podcast intro. The advertisement took me almost no time, so I was on a roll when I decided to make the intro which ended up taking the most time. I struggled to find the audio pieces I wanted to use and how to fit them in to the intro. At one point, I scrapped the whole thing and started over. I like how it came out but I can’t listen to it too much because I can hear every little mistake. The last thing I made was the design promo, which was the easiest assignment. I made a bumper sticker so I looked on the internet to gather some ideas on what it should look like. I also used Canva templates to help me out. The most work I had to do for this assignment was creating a steering wheel graphic with lighting bolts to symbolize a horn honking. I think all my assignments came out good, some I think are better than others but that’s pretty normal for the work in this class.

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed the work this week and even though it took me a long time, I think the work reflects my efforts. Normally, I end my summary saying how I’m excited for next week, but I am honestly a little nervous. Although I am excited to see the finished product, I’m a little nervous to record and edit the podcast. Hopefully next week I’ll look back at my apprehensiveness and laugh.

Week 9 Weekly Summary

Starting Off

My motivation is in the gutter, but I must keep chugging on. I am excited for the upcoming weeks, as I am thrilled to start on the radio show. I can’t wait to get to know some of my peers as well as their course characters. We scheduled to do a Zoom meeting on Monday, as well as made a shared Google Doc in order to put all of our thoughts down and to start planning for the radio show.

Radio Show Progress and Promo

As far as progress goes, I love my group! I talk about it more in my blog post, Radio Show Progress, but so far, everything has gone good in terms of everyone staying on task. We were pretty quick to contact each other, as well as make a plan for a Zoom meeting in order to introduce ourselves. Also, we were comfortable in sharing ideas, as well as assigning tasks to people. Several radio bumpers and commercials have already been made, as well as an intro for the show!

For the promo, I knew I wanted to make a design that would represent our group, as well as the vibe we were going for during the show. I made it on Canva and used Google in order to find any images to use. I used a lot of neon, bright colors, as well as a font, that truly keeps the cyber-punk vibe. It is simple, yet effective as it gets across what the radio show is truly about.

Audio Assignments

For the first audio assignment, I did a radio bumper! I go more in depth about the process in my blog post about it, but I made it for the radio show for our group project! I made it as a back-up in case we would need an extra one, but I had fun with it! I liked being able to be creative in terms of making it more futuristic and tech-noir related.

For the second (and last) audio assignment, I made a commercial! We are going to use it in our radio show, and I knew I wanted to make it advertise something we could see in the near future. I decided to advertise a little robot helper that can help with everyday tasks, like cooking or cleaning. Like I said before, I go more in depth in my other blog post, but I wanted it to be realistic to the possible times we could live in in the future.

Daily Creates

Daily Create #1

Confusion by Cleofas Orozco Blancarte

For the first daily create of the week, we had to find or take a photo that represents confusion! I was a bit stumped by this, but I thought of some art pieces that definitely fit this prompt! Confusion by Cleofas Orozco Blancarte is mind-boggling and makes you think of what you are truly looking at.

Daily Create #2

punch card with the phrase, "If we burn, you burn with us!"

For the second daily create of the week, we had to make a punch card! I decided to do an iconic line from the movie series, Hunger Games, since a new book was released this week about Haymitch, Katniss’s mentor.

Daily Create #3

For the last daily create, we were asked to recreate this pose. But, I wanted to do something a little different, so I made him a superhero! Flying through the city with a big, billowing cape, about to save the city!

Overall

Overall, it was a pretty good week! I was able to manage my time well, and I loved meeting my group members and getting to know them a bit more! I am very excited to do this radio show, as it will allow me to step outside the box, and also practice using audio equipment! Now on to the next week…

This Week Working With The Radio Show Fearless Femme Beauties:

This week was a blast! Up in the banner above is of me and all of my archetype radio show members. This was also my work for my Cyber 75 The Vibe Radio Show Design Project Assignment. I decided to make a banner that includes all group members so this can represent us as a whole and also individually because each character is rightfully different and should be appreciated in their own way. Also – Just to note, some of these pictures are from the actual pages of these characters but some are not. I picked out some of the pictures myself because I wanted everyone to have their own picture to represent them and put a face to the name. Just in case you try to go to their pages, and you don’t see these pictures there. Now you know.

The first audio assignment I completed was to Create a Radio Bumper. I did this for the DS106 radio show and wanted to try to create another one this radio show. This bumper is intended to be used during a section of the radio show that reminds people who the Fearless Femmes are, what we do, why, and how they can be a part of it. I also tried to make it a bit more personal between one character and the audience, sometimes it may seem more personal talking to the audience like that than the whole group saying something. My work is posted here: Cyber 75 The Vibe Radio Show Radio Bumper

The second audio assignment I completed was the Radio Show Intermission Assignment. I chose this audio assignment to help build our story line and to add some spice to the radio show. I gave more exposure on each characters name and exposed “secrets” or “tea” to keep listeners engaged. My work is posted below: Cyber 75 The vibe (Featuring the Fearless Femmes) Radio Show Intermission

Overall Progress That Was Made This Week:

Cyber 75 The Vibe Radio Show In-Progress (Featuring the Fearless Femmes)

We had our first meeting this past Monday, and since then we have accomplished a ton. In my post, I’ve put bullet points on most of the things we’ve done, clearly set out what we want to accomplish, and what plans we have in the future (next week). So far, we have really stuck to the plan and the plan has been executed beautifully by everyone. Overall, I’m very happy with the progress we’ve made.

Last But Not Least; Some Daily Creation Fun!

Daily Create Shenanigans – Week 9 is where I posted my daily creates.

I posted about what confusion looks like to me, how I celebrated St. Paddy’s Day, and had the chance to talk about the little cute fishies I found on Etsy!

Great topics this week 🙂

I really enjoyed working with my group this week and can’t wait for us to put all of hard work together next week when we create the final product.

Weekly Summary: Week 9

This week was mainly focused on the begining of creating our radio shows. I met with my three other group members on Monday over zoom to discuss what our plan was and how we were going to work our show out. I talk more about this on my progress blog post.

The rest of the week was pretty much working on my solo assignments. I started to create my portion of the radio show with scripts for my segment, a commercial, a show flyer, my daily creates, and my two audio assignments.

I wanted my two audio assignments to help me make progress with my portion of the radio show so I chose creating a commercial and creating a news story. I plan to use my commercial as one of the ones my group will be using in our final radio show. I chose the news story assignment because that is basically what are entire show is. Although I still have to come up with another story or two to fill up my 5-7 min slot, this assignment helped me to get a head start. I wrote a news story and had AI read it out. I tried the Colossyan website and was able to create an AI generated presentation from my script but then when I went to download it I had a lot of issues.

Getting Ready for the radio show

This week most of my time went to planning and perfecting things to put into our radio show.

After meeting with the group Monday my job was to create radio bumpers and intermissions. I have improved so much at using audacity to edit and sync audio together.

Starting with the intermission I created, I wanted to make a quick bumper that would catch the listeners attention. I envision this to come on after a commercial and right before the show starts back.

To captivate the listeners I wanted to use a glitchy/siren/static sound effect. I feel like this sound captivates people because it almost sounds like a warning message. This sound also goes with the theme of tech noir and cyber punk so I felt it fit very well.

I used Narakeet to transcribe my script into a cool sounding voice over. I used Freesound to find different glitchy/static sound effects that felt fitting to the show and synced them all together in audacity.

The hardest part with the intermission was lowering the volume of the sound effects so it wasn’t to overpowering. I’m still learning audacity so I had to watch a couple youtube videos to figure out how to lower the volume, but I really like the outcome of the intermission!

For the radio bumper, we agreed as a team that we wanted them to be upbeat and “pop” like, while still being tech noir aesthetic.

I decided to make the background music a little bit more “pop” and upbeat and then for the voice over it sounds a bit more glitchy to connect it with the tech noir side.

I really liked the way this bumper came out. I think it’s kind of catchy which I think is important for radio bumpers.

I used the same tools to create the bumper as I did for the intermission which were, Audacity for editing and syncing, Narakeet for transcribing a script into a voiceover, and Freesound for upbeat sound effects.

The most difficult task in this assignment was really just choosing which voice over I wanted. There are so many choices to choose from on Narakeet, so i listened to multiple voices over and over to see which would fit best in the bumper. Picking my background sound first helped me pick the voice over because I had an idea of what I was going for at this point.

The Promo videoI created was probably the easiest out of all the assignments. I created it on Canva which is probably why it was so easy for me. I’ve become very familiar and comfortable with Canva so, it doesn’t take me too long to get the outcome I want.

The idea behind the promo video I made was that we could use it as promotion on our social media accounts. So I wanted it to have cool captivating graphics, catchy background music, but also short and straight to the point.

I really liked adding all of our group members course character social media accounts at the end. I thought it was a clever way to let the class know which course characters are in this radio show.

The Fearless Femmes have made so much progress on our radio show. We’ve been staying in touch through our group chat and updating each other in our shared google doc on the work we’ve completed. I think our show is gonna turn out super cool and i’m excited to see the outcome. We still have a little bit too finish before we start recording like the outro and solidifying our topics of discussion.

I completed 3 daily creates this week Tuesday – Thursday. I’m really enjoying the creativity of the prompts and I love seeing what everyone else does for their creates. You can check out mine here:

Overall I think it’s been a very successful week in preparing for next weeks radio show. I used my time wisely by using the 2 audio assignments as a way to get started on creating content for our show and I think it worked out great! I’ve never recorded a podcast so I look forward to creating it next week. I’m also so excited to listen to everyone else’s podcasts!

Sincerely, Kristen
