Week 4

This week was different becuase we were doing more things with audio. I was not used to doing audio I have never done anything with audio before so it was new but I was able to get the assignments done.

The Three Daily creates were pretty easy, drawing the trex was pretty fun and easy along with seeing all the posts for the brazy look

Week 4 Summary

This week, we dove into audio storytelling, which was pretty exciting for me. I love using Soundtrap for audio editing! it’s super user-friendly and gets the job done well. I also set up a SoundCloud account to store and share my projects.

I watched 3 videos/audios: two by Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad and another called “Moon Graffiti.” Both were cool, but “Moon Graffiti” really grabbed my attention. On Wednesday night, I tuned into a radio show and wrote a little reflection about my experience. It was an interesting listen and gave me some new ideas.

Overall, it was a great week that deepened my appreciation for the art of audio storytelling.

Assignments

This week, we had the opportunity to choose two assignments from the audio category in the assignment bank, and we were given two additional tasks. I listed them all below. The two assignments I picked were “Audio From Hell” and “The Mind of a CEO.” The last two tasks given to us were “After Dinner,” which is a sound effect story, and a radio bumper. For the radio bumper, I asked Dr. Oblivion to recite it for me.

3 Daily Creates I participated in this week:

I voted! I’m not sure if we’re supposed to keep our votes anonymous, but I did vote!

Here are some of the post I interacted with:

Here is my radio show idea:

See you next week!!

Week 4 Summary

I admittedly was trying to avoid doing audio assignments since they required me to download stuff but looks like I couldn’t avoid them in the end. Since I was busy, I had to get them done within two days.

I was lost for this since it was such a wide range of possibilities, I am not someone who knows much about radio I only listen to music and its ad free, so I don’t even get breaks for ads anymore. Still, I tried to have multiple ideas since it was plural the first one was the best.

Did the audio story telling assignments and was shocked by the moon graffiti I didn’t really understand the title until I finally listened to it. I was fun discovering how many sounds I unconsciously recognized.

Lots of drawing this week, and then there was one I didn’t understand at all so I didn’t end up doing to at all.

Radio bumper was not my favorite part of the week, but I managed to get it done, getting through something even when it doesn’t interest you take a lot of energy out of a person.

Overall, this week’s audio-based elements were a surprise but not a bad one exactly. Got to try new things and experiment with new programs that I haven’t used before. So, it was a great experience learning to use more to add elements to the stories I create and to appreciate the small detail others add.

3rd week summary

This week was a fast one, I feel like it was just Monday yesterday but somehow here I am writing another weekly summary post for this week. I showed off an amazing bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich which I believe is the best, I did a SnapChat Photoshop of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce which came out perfect for what the assignment goal was, and last I attempted to make a class header and while I was the first to upload I came back to take a glance and saw some of the amazing header my classmates made it quickly made me realize just how amazing a simple header could be I was really impressed by their work. This week I went with all visual assignments as I hope to improve me editing creativity.

Weekly Summary #3: Getting the hang of it

M. Marshall 1.31

Another week another summary, let’s get into it.

I felt pretty good about the work I did this week. I definitely did better with the procrastination issue. I am taking 17 credits, which gets pretty overwhelming pretty fast. To counterbalance this, I made sure to spread out the work for this class instead of having to do it all Friday night. Of course, I am here Friday night, so the process isn’t perfect. I think sometimes I feel like if I do an assignment before the last minute, then I will realize that there was something I need to fix, and doing it last minute puts just the right amount of pressure on me to do it well and in a good amount of time. In reality, when I do something early, I am completely relieved and don’t feel so stressed.

This week I leaned in to the design aspect of this course with my assignments, these turned out pretty cool and I was pretty proud of myself. I showed my girlfriend my guess the song photo, and she got it immediately.

I was relieved to only have 3 daily creates this week, as keeping track of them every day last week was pretty tiring and I would get stressed when would accidentally leave them to the end of the day.

Edit: I tried to embed these, but WordPress did not like the link. Maybe next week I’ll have the hang of it.

Day 1: Design a header for @creating

Day 2: How woke is your sandwich?

Day 3: Obviously photoshopped

Day 3 was definitely my favorite. I got to combine my two favorite things!

Overall, this week was pretty fun and I’m glad I’m doing this class. I’m excited to continue learning and trying new things. I can’t believe next week will have been a full month of classes.

Week 3 Summary

This week is beginning to become a blur, but I remember I did my daily creates earlier in the week and posted a comment on the ds106 site. I’m not sure if it was approved, but I tried anyway. I also received the joyous news that our assignments and summaries don’t have to strictly adhere to the “at least two paragraphs describing the story behind your art” on top of everything else you have to write rule. Still, I find myself completing the assignments and enjoying making or editing images but come to a standstill when it’s time to write about it on a website. Oh well, just 13 more weeks (including exam week), right?

I did the daily creates for Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday, pictured below. I made the Australian flag and outline on Krita, found pictures of Busch Gardens on google, and made an anti-word cloud based on a page of the Hunger Games. The bird is meant to represent a mockingbird.

For the three weekly assignments, I made Vibrant Parking Deck, Rain World Overseer Hologram, and Resistance Logo. This week was limited to design and visual assignments.

I may or may not have forgotten about the Photoblitz for a while, but I still got it done in time. These were my prompts and my pictures.

This class is still a bit stressful, but I’m starting to figure out how it works. Hopefully I will become less averse to writing in the coming weeks.

My Creative Journey: Week 3

Summary

This week was character week and I had a lot of fun making creations from the assignment bank based on my character. Also I am a lot more comfortable using Canva now and I feel like I understand its features better unlike the first time I used it. My favorite activity this week was definitely Photoblitz. I enjoyed coming up with fun ideas for all the photo prompts. Lastly, for the reflection of design thoughts I was partially already familiar with a lot of what was explained because I’ve taken prior art classes which explained the principles of design plenty of times.

Daily Creates

The Daily Creates this week were fairly simple. I completed 3 and only 2 of them had prompts that actually required creating something myself. But I still put in the effort and explained the inspiration behind each one shown in my post called Inside My Creative Mind.

Assignment Bank

For character week I put a lot of work into each post about Runa Starr. In For Wanted Dead or Alive I created a wanted poster of Runa from when she was younger because she works in the rebellion so I am sure there would be plenty of posters around the city trying to capture her. For Tattoos Hold Hidden Messages I drew 3 tattoo designs for Runa that she would probably have on her body. Lastly, for Level Up I created a RPG game card for Runa showcasing her stats as if she was a game character.

PhotoBlitz

Ready, Set, Photoblitz was a fun and fast paced activity that I loved doing. My photos were silly but I think the inspiration behind them were all well thought out. I had to take 7 pictures in only a matter of minutes and it was surprisingly not as simple as I originally thought, but I would definitely do it again one day with a group of friends to see what everyone takes pictures of with the fun prompts.

Design Thoughts

This week I went over the thought process that goes into designs. In my post The Art of Design I explained how certain color schemes can have an affect on portraying a mood for settings and aesthetics. I also did a quick analysis of the design principles used on making a movie’s poster.

Third Week’s the Charm – Week 3 Summary

I found this week to be much more easy going than the last which was a very nice break. The assigned tasks were really fun and engaging! The Photoblitz was definetly my favorite. I put it off until the last minute because I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but it was really easy and I got a good walk in. My least favorite assignment of the week was the Dream House assignment that I chose from the assignment bank. I acknowledge that this was my responsibility and I probaly should have just quit and chose something else, but I’m stubborn so I stuck with it. The thing that I didn’t like about this assignment was having to justify my why this was my character’s house. I don’t know if I had writers block or made a bad choice with the house, but that blog was really hard for me to write. I did push through, however, and the blog is up if you’re curious about Krissy’s house. Still this was a god week, and if all the weeks end up like this one, I think I’m in good shape.

Daily Creates

The Daily Creates were hard for me this week. I really enjoyed them last week but this time around, I just felt uninspired and I think you can see that in my work. I did Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday’s prompt. I looked at Monday’s prompt and thought it was really cool and I wanted to try it but the day slipped away from me before I got the chance.

Tuesday’s daily create was to make a header for the new create page. I used Canva to make the banner. I added some neon tech, which I know from watching the movie poster video that shows themes of action and cyberpunk. Then I added some text with fun fonts to convey what the page was about.

Wednesday’s Daily Create was the anti cloud. I thought the concept for this was really cool. I can’t even imagine how long it took for them to find every word that wasn’t in those books. There were quite a few books to choose from, so I’m thinking at least a year to compile what they had. For my DC I used the first six words to make art. It was hard because the words are so random but I did my best. Once again, I used canva to compile the images and the text.

The last one was rate how woke a sandwich is. This one was easy because all I had to do was google my favorite sandwich and then rate it’s wokeness. It did make me start craving this sandwich though which was really unfortunate for me since I had no means to get one.

Assignments

The assignments were easy this time around. I appreciate how much freedom there is in being able to choose the assignment. I really liked how my video game screen turned out. The image is good on its own but I think the video glitch effect I added really completed it, and made it look like a real videoo game screen.

****flashing lights****

I liked making my logo, it was one of the easier assignments, and I was excited to make it about me instead of my course character. Making content for Krissy is fun but the only hard part is you have to really think about what she likes and doesn’t like plus the decisions she would and wouldn’t make. I didn’t realize how relaxing it is to just know what I like.

My last assignment was finding a house for my character. This assignment wasn’t all bad, I had a hard time writing the blog but looking for a house was fun. I really like this house, I think it’s beautiful. There are pops of color while still maintaining a classic look. For those who read my Pinterest assignment, you know that I love old fashioned homes and colors, so I think it’s fitting that Krissy would have some of the same interests as me.

Finally, for Photoblitz, this project was really cool. I saw that Photoblitz originally came from a Daily Shoot, which is like a Daily Create but with photography. When I was doing the Photoblitz, I had some ideas for pictures but they weren’t possible given the time constraint so I wonder how these prompts would have turned out if I had the whole day.

Comments

I tried to leave one comment every day on a different blog. I think it’s funny to look back on my comments, because as my work load for the week got heavier, my comments became shorter. On Monday I left a really long comment on The Digital Canvas, to paraphrase, I explained how I agreed with their reflection on Graphic Design and I think it’s cool how a font can reflect the air of a show. Tuesday, I commented on Tigerflora’s game screen and I said “I love your “Game Over” metaphor. It’s a wonderful reminder that the game isn’t over until you quit. As long as you keep trying and failing, you’ll eventually complete your level and, one day, maybe even finish the game!” I thought the message was nice and could be applied to more than their character. Wednesday, I commented on Oh Noir You Didn’t’s Shakesperean cat. I said “Mango is adorable! I love to see a fellow Canva user. It has been so helpful for this class, and it has saved my butt for the Daily Creates. The prompts that don’t involve taking pictures or screenshots have me running to Canva. I whip something together with the mass amount of resources it has, and my Daily Create comes out looking so good! I can also completely relate to having hundreds of pictures of my cat on my phone. I liked the quote you used and how well it matched the picture. Do you know which play this line is from? I’m not the biggest Shakespeare fan, but he does have a couple of plays that I like.” I appreciated the thought that went into matching a Shakespeare quote to a picture of their cat. The picture focused on Mango’s eyes so they picked a quote that also focused on eyes. Thursday, I looked at Rebecca’s Radient Realm and I commented on their Tattoo art. I said ā€œThese tattoos are crazy good. I’m obsessed! I think each color option is really cool, too. It’s so fun to see how the colors add a different vibe to the same tattoo! I like the acknowledgment that Evelyn is a classy gal. Do you think she has multiple tattoos, or is this her only one?ā€ I was really impressed with the artwork for Evelyn’s tattoo, the sketch was gorgeous and the each color pallete was a nice compliment. Finally, on Friday I commented on Sam’s Club’s GIF: ā€œLOL, this made me giggle! I like the contrast of his quiet character with his loud actions. His eyes and mouth remind me of Sussie from The Amazing World of Gumball. Great job!ā€ The gif was really funny, and as I mentioned the difference between the sullen character and their extravagent face movements was very silly.

Closing Thoughts

I had been looking forward to this week because I was overwhelmed from the Digital Bootcamp, and I’m glad I stuck it out because this was a nice workload. I wasn’t overwhelmed with the amount and I enjoyed the assignments. I hope week four is even better!

Weekly Summary

This week was a bit better than the last. I missed the daily creates this week, but I got pretty much everything else. Time and balance have been the issues for me. Figuring out how to get everything done for this class while also staying on top of my psych and English classes and vice vice versa. I felt the amount of assignments for this week was more manageable than last week for sure.

This week, a running theme for me was color. My design thoughts and Corpse Bride color analysis especially focused on how color is used and the impact it can have; the Corpse Bride analysis was my favorite assignment I’ve done so far. I also introduced my course character, Lenore Glaphyra by creating a business card and showcasing her favorite song lyric; I felt decent about these creations. Similar to last week, if I had more time in my schedule, they would’ve been much more intricate.

My photoblitz was the last thing I completed, mainly because I was hoping my flareup would ease by the end of the week, but it didn’t. Nevertheless, I powered through. It took me longer than 20 minutes as a result, but I felt happy with the results.

Just When I thought DS106 Couldn’t Get Any Better…

First off, what-in-the-h-e-double-hockey-stick-is-a-photoblitz?! I’d never heard of that before, and this was the first time I got to experience something like this. I can only imagine what this would look like in an in-person classroom setting. I had fun with it and my inner child came out while I was running around trying to find things to take pictures of to match with the tasks in the time frame of 20 minutes. 10/10 for this assignment activity.

I found 3 assignments that I wanted to complete in the Design Assignment bank this week.

Before completing any assignments, I had gone through almost all of the assignments in both the Visual and Design Assignment Bank. I resonated with 3 assignments in the design bank the most.

The first one I completed was the tattoo designs assignment, which is based on ā€œTattoos that Describe youā€. Instead of describing myself I wanted to build the image of my Technoir character, Sapphria Mae. In my post, Don’t Say the Word Destiny While Reading This Post, you can feel the femme fatale vibes through the description of the tattoos. It isn’t the actual tattoos by itself that will lead you to think “femme fatale”. But I also thought that it was perfect for this type of character because it’s a little manipulative. The tattoos look sweet and innocent or cute, but they can be fatal if you look Sapphria in the eyes while she’s pointing her finger at you, or if she can get you to say the word “Destiny”. Read my post for more details on this.

The second assignment was a missing person flyer. I also created this in honor of Sapphria Mae because it’s in her nature to go missing or disappear! My post talks about the circumstance for her disappearance being unknown. With added information about her appearance, what she was wearing before she went missing, and an image of her on a flyer with contact information if you see her. I had fun with this one and put the most effort into this assignment because I had to make many edits to the flyer template. So worth it though.

My third post is called, Let’s Get Some Dinner. Inspired by the menu design assignment in the design assignment bank. Instead of designing my own menu, I wanted to design a menu that I felt like my Greek Femme Fatal character would have liked, and with a story behind it! The storyline was of a local restaurant owner who fell in love with Sapphria in Greece (Her hometown) and let her make an inspiring menu for his restaurant for the weekend. I chose classic Greek dishes and beverages to put on the menu to go with my character’s theme. In my post I talk more about why I designed the menu the way I did. Go check it out.

Daily Create Shenanigans on Week 3

I posted 3 daily creates this week on Mastodon. Each post being very different from the others. For all three of these Daily Creates I used Canva to create them or edit them. To see each of these you can click on the header of this paragraph, or you can click on the links below for quicker access.

Me Then and Now Doing Technology ; This one was nostalgic.

Design Our Header Image ; This one I felt I was most creative with and put the most thought into.

Obviously Photoshopped ; This one I find the most humorous and I had the most fun with it.

I also did my best to comment more and make replies to my peers this week! You can also see my replies in my post.

Design Thoughts Reflection

My reflection post was mainly about Chipp Kidd. I found him to be humorous, intellectual, and creative. Overall, an awesome human being from what I could see in the materials I looked through this week. I loved learning more about graphic design, what goes into making a book jacket, and how 2 people can align to make an awesome creation together.

I also learned more about our DS106 Cyberpunk and Technoir themes. I look forward to implementing this material into my work in the weeks to come.

Voting

One of the last things I did was vote on my favorite post for the week. I thought this was fun and I can’t wait to see everyone’s top rated favorites (Hopefully we will see this) next week. I loved looking at my classmates’ characters, blog pages, and creativity!

Thank you all for taking the time to read up on Your Weekly Adrenaline Rush.
