Weekly Summary

I started off this week with the Daily Creates. I think whatever algorithm used to select the daily creates was on our side this week, and there were some really easy ones to complete. In other weeks, it may have taken my awhile to figure out how to go about solving/ figuring out the daily create, so I was grateful for the lighter load. I first started by using the Mutsuacen website and creating a “Swag” floating in the wind and surrounded by colorful dots. I then had to determine the meaning of a more ominous image, and I decided that it was the secret entrance to a military base. Finally, I was asked to write a message for a sky writer, and I couldn’t get a “drink more ovaltine” out of my head so I went with it. You can find these posts here.

I was a little bit nervous about the 3 audio assignments as it had been years since I last messed around with Audacity, but luckily it wasn’t bad at all. I mostly focused on posts that allowed me to mix different sounds together for my AI/character implementations. I also enjoyed the Chrome Music Labs assignment as it allowed me to view the music more visually. The blog post can be found here.

The audio storytelling assignment left me stumped for awhile, so I decided to go with a more basic formula with a dragon and knight in shining armor. My favorite part of this assignment was collecting and listening through all of the free audio resources to find the audios that suited my story just right. I thought this assignment would take me longer to do, but it was fairly easy to think of different sounds that needed to be in the story. The blog can be found here.

The radio shows assignment was my favorite for the week because I feel like the radio show project is so perfect for my character, Isaiah Beacon. He already has his own media empire and is always looking for more avenues to preach his pro-AI gospel, so I feel like he will really take advantage of the radio show idea. He will definitely be very confrontational with anyone who disagrees with him. You can read more about that here.

Week 4 Summery

Here I am playing catch up again this week. Week 3 was rough, so it bleeds into week 4.

Here are 3 daily creates in one post.

here is a single

I was instantly overwhelmed by the audio assignments listed for this week. So, I broke it down to just one assignment at a time and tried not to look at it as a whole. Here is the first assignment I finished.

After finishing my Radio Bumper, the audio assignments don’t seem so scarry.

I have one fully formed idea for a radio show. I just need to hear feedback from the other characters’ creators.

The next assignment I finished was spooky dialogue. I had fun playing with stretching words or speeding them up. In the end I learned a few things and made something haunting.

I enjoyed the radio listening for homework this week. It was relaxing and fun.

On Friday I went to Target and bought headphones and a microphone to finish my work. Good decision, it made getting the final edits and bit of work done easier.

While recording was easier the mic picks up more and it is a bit scratchy. Well things to work on.

All right I am down to the wire ad I just posted my last assignment. I started it earlier in the week and knew exactly what I wanted it to sound like. I think I pulled it off.

Well, I was very tired this week still healing from my fall last week. My hand is still sore, but I got it all done. wasn’t sure I would! good night!

Will AI Kill Us? – Consult With Your Doctor

Today my friends and I had an informative conversation with Dr. Oblivion. The original question I gave him was Can AI kill us? Below is his real response.

The perennial question of artificial intelligence unleashing its murderous tendencies. Well first and foremost, AI itself does not possess the capability to want or desire anything including killing. AI is programmed to fulfill specific functions and tasks within the constraints of its programming and data inputs. So in essence, AI does not have inherent intentions or motivations to kill in the same way that humans do. However, it is possible for AI to be programmed or manipulated by humans with malicious intent leading to potential harm. So the real concern here lies more with the ethics and intentions of those who wield and control AI rather than the AI itself. Keep that in mind when pondering the apocalyptic scenarios of AI-induced doom. Now, if you excuse me, I have more important inquiries to attend to.

Below is a link to my edited version. Once again, thanks to my friends who voiced the questions.

911 what’s your emergency?

The following is a fake 911 call Lady Alice E Smythe made as a child. It is an example of her character trait of knowing more than everyone else. I estimate her age in the recording to be around 9 years old. sit back and enjoy listing to the “emergency”.

I used sound effects from Freesound. Here are some of the sound clips I used:
40X40cm WindowGlass Carpet 3 by P.jezsek
Rat in the attic, possum in the roof by Darius Kedros
Slam door by Soundsforhim
Cat Angry Hissing 01 by promete

The voices are mine or my 9-year-old child. I made her so it counts.

I hope you enjoyed the little story as much as I enjoyed making it.

Audio Storytelling

For my audio storytelling, I decided to tell the story of a knight saving a little girl from a dragon. Our hero starts with a walk in the woods until he hears a roar of a dragon nearby. Then a little girl screams for help and our hero breaks into a sprint. Once he reaches the dragon, the knight unsheathes his sword and fights the dragon. The dragon then collapses dramatically and everyone in the local village gives praise to the brave knight.

Weekly Summary

by Andrew Johnson

For our fourth week of ds106 I enjoyed the different audio effects and assignments that were put forth. To start, the Moon Graffiti sparked my interest because of the cool sound effects and storytelling of every character involved. The use of Ronald Regan’s actual speech in the occurrence of an unsuccessful mission to the moon was quite enticing.

When I started the radio bumper, I thought it was going to be difficult to create content that would engage listeners. However, I think the project came out very well and I am excited to further my enlightenment on more of these. With this, listening to Wednesday’s ds106 Radio was an interesting storyline with the theme based on a natural human involved with multiple AI android’s.

During my daily creates for this week I used deep.ai to generate most of my images. I had no difficulty using this program and am more than happy to use it again.

For my Sound Effect Story, I started strong by importing audio to Audacity, trying to represent a baseball-like atmosphere. Unfortunately, I ran into trouble with linking Audacity to Audio.com. Currently, I am trying to work on this situation.

Audio Assignments

For my first audio assignment, I created a bit of audio using Chrome Music Labs. My original goal was to draw my imaginary friend from childhood, Carl the Octopus. After I finished his outline, I realized he was looking more like a bug, so I went with it and added antennas. Even though I was creating the audio based on coloring in the blocks, I still think it sounded ok. You can view/listen to my creation here.

The second audio assignment asked me to mix together at least 4 different scary audios to make one, ultimate spooky audio. I decided to use AI with this assignment by picking sounds that were very robotic and reminiscent of a robot takeover. I figured that this is what a lot of older people hear when someone on the news is talking about how AI will ruin everything.

Finally, I decided to implement my character in an assignment that asked me to record myself saying an inspirational quote and mix background music or instrumentals that seemed appropriate or inspiring. I decided to use text to speech software that said my character’s quote. I then mixed it with the sound of fire crackling, as that sound seemed as intense at the quote.
