This is not canon to the story; I just thought it would be a funny idea. There were a lot of sounds used in this: background traffic, Zer0 walking, robot noises, car honk, car crash, and of course, robot glitching noises. I put all of these files in audacity and trimmed them, placed them carefully, and changed how loud and quiet they are so that a story could be told through the sound.
I had a grand ole time getting this playlist together. I think it not only fits with who I envision my course character, Bethany, to be, but it also brings out some interesting parts of her character.
Marlene on the Wall: This song reminds of her of her deceased partner, and the bond that she’ll have with him no matter what actually happened.
You Send Me: Their song- it just feels so warm.
Christine: She sometimes feels like Christine, disintegrating, someone with multiple faces.
A Means to an End: Besides just liking Joy Devision, Bethany likes the particular brand of melancholy that this song is.
I Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You: In her line of work, it stands to be a good reminder that she doesn’t want to be like those around her. This song is an after-work palate cleanser.
Good News: One of the more modern songs on her playlist, it serves to knock her out of her funks and remind her that there is a world outside of everything in her head.
Over and Over: She likes to turn up this song while she’s cleaning. She just enjoys singing along and pretending she’s on stage.
Don’t Renegade on Our Love: The title is perhaps too indicative- she loves this song but hates that it makes her feel like she betrayed everyone around her.
Fallingwater: This song is either a “cry alone at night” song or a “scream in the car on the way to work” song.
The news jingle at the beginning of the recording was made by chimerical on FreeSound.org. For the voice, I used a text-to-speech feature of ChatGPT. I put these together in Audacity and uploaded it to Soundcloud. Quite frankly, I didn’t know Soundcloud was still being used before this class required me to create an account. The news broadcast relates to my story, as it is broadcasting the moment the public found out that ai had gained consciousness.
Now presenting, my ds106 radio bumper! I used an AI text-to-speech generator to get the “you’re listening to ds106 radio” audio clip, and then used the tools within audacity to cut that up and make it more interesting. I had some difficulties finding an online program that would let me download the audio clip for free. I’m sure there were ways around this (free trials, screen recording), but since I didn’t need that much precision from the TTS tool, I opted to just keep looking for one that would let me download it with no hassle. Following that, I sourced a variety of weird, eerie music and sounds from Freesound and continued to chop these up and distort them. I was a big fan of the “distort” tool and changing the pitch.
Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out! I used to listen to the radio all the time as a kid (and still do now), so I tried to emulate what I heard there. However, I think ds106 is a little bit more retro/techno/weird than Elliot in the Morning, which led to the decisions to make the bumper a little unsettling.
I went to Chrome Music Lab’s Song Maker feature to edit and play the notes. The melody is from a Coldplay song, feelslikeimfallinginlove. I was listening to the song trying to figure out what music to write, so I started writing the song by ear while adding some harmonies and extending notes due to the limitations of the song maker. I’ve been listening to Coldplay since I was in middle school, and I’ve been singing since preschool. Honestly, I was very relieved the song didn’t have any flats or sharps in it, or else I wouldn’t have been able to make it with chrome’s song maker. If you want to mess around with it yourself, here’s the link.
I have definitely enjoyed getting to learn about and experiment with audio. I had never done anything like this before so it was very cool to learn about. I particularly liked Audacity, it seemed like a great place for people trying things out and I look forward to continuing to try it. Here’s what the week looked like!
I started with the daily creates for this week.

Honestly, I hate how the posts look embedded into the page, I may need to go to the DKC again just to figure this out. It is so ugly it makes me unreasonably frustrated and I’ve tried everything I can figure out. This is just a learning curve, but still frustrating.
I tuned into the DS106 radio on Tuesday which I enjoyed a lot!
I listened to Moon Graffiti by the Truth Podcast. A line that was super eerie to me was, “How many people do you think they’ll bury by the time they’re through?”
I’ve really been enjoying this class. I’ve definitely struggled to connect my posts to the TechNoir theme of the class and my character, but I think as time goes on I will get better at it.
Listening to Moon Graffiti was a very cool experience. It is interesting to think about a timeline where the mission to land on the Moon failed and to contemplate how worthwhile it is to go to the Moon. Last semester I took Writing About the Moon with Dr. Scanlon, and we talked a lot about the history of the Moon landing. Pretty much as soon as Apollo 11 landed back on Earth, pink slips of paper to fire employees were being handed out because the project was over and they could no longer expend the resources necessary to fund NASA. I wonder if Apollo 11 had failed if they would have continued to push for it, or if they would have just given up. The radio-sound of the podcast makes it feel like a real historical audio of something that happened.
For my sound effects story, I did a pretty short story. The idea behind the audio is that it is someone running across the finish line of a race! It’s pretty short but I thought it was fun.
I used the suggested website, Collosyan. I didn’t have any great ideas so I did a news story based on a common scam technique from the 2000’s and 2010’s (ish), where a person receives an email from someone claiming to be a prince from Nigeria asking for money to unfreeze their bank account. The news story covers the request for $40,000 and the rewards for helping the prince to unfreeze his bank account. The AI created a video which I made into an audio file. Here it is!
