Bees Video Essay

M. Marshall 2.14

As everyone else has, I watched something and created a video essay on a scene from it. I watched “Hated in the Nation” from Black Mirror.

Of course, this is not a reflection on the full episode, but it definitely freaked me out a lot.

After I watched the episode I considered what scene to analyze, and I chose the one where Karin and Blue talk to the woman who sent the cake to Jo Powers. I really appreciated the level of foreshadowing that this scene gave. It was interesting to see them talk about the “death to” hashtag. Looking back and knowing she was one of the people responsible for her death, yet she was so defensive and frustrated. It was a strong reminder of the cognitive dissonance people experience between real life and their online actions.

I am hoping that as we experiment more with video assignments I will get better at this. I hope one day I will look back on this and cringe at my lack of video editing skills. I had hoped to screen record the video, but Netflix is very sneaky with blacking out the screen, so I ultimately recorded it on my phone. If I did another video essay in the future I would probably try to invest more time in figuring that out.

This one was pretty simple, I recorded the video on my phone and recorded a voice over on my laptop. I was somewhat nervous to do this so I had to do a couple takes with a general script. I still stumbled on my words some but nobody is perfect so I hope anyone reading this or watching the video essay enjoys it well enough. Here it is:

It’s Everyday Bro

The last video assignment I decided to complete was called “What do you do?” The assignment’s guidelines instructed you to record a minimum of eight seconds of a certain daily activity. Find the assignment here: What Do You Do Assignment. I just opted to record myself cleaning my teeth, since I do that every single day. View my video up above! To be honest, I was sitting in my room trying to think of things I did every day, and brushing my teeth is definitely one of those things. It’s probably not the most original thing I could have done.

Julius Lawrence’s Dog

“TikTok of your pet” is the name of the next video assignment I decided to complete. It can be accessed at TikTok of Pet Assignment. The instructions for the job were rather straightforward: make a tiktok of your pet acting silly, then overlay the video with a humorous or well-known sound. This is Mason, a black lab that is my dog. Since our course character must appear in two of the three video projects, I will claim that this is truly Otis, the dog of my course character. Julius Lawrence became lonely living alone in New York after graduating from UVA, so he adopted an older black lab and they have since become closest friends. Check out my tiktok linked above and the photos of the two below, they do everything together! As you can see from the pictures below, Otis has quite the personality.

Top 10 NBA Players With a Slight Twist

Rather than talk to the bot as option A, I choose to complete the three video assignments from the assignment bank. Top 10 or Ranking Video Assignment is the link to the first assignment bank I decided to do. I was given the task of creating a top 10 or ranking video that you watch below on  YouTube. I’ve been watching a lot of NBA lately, so I thought I would rate my current top 10 players. Videos of some of the players’ best plays from this season are included in my top 10. Julius Lawrence, my course character, is currently the best player in the NBA, as you will see when you look through my top ten. He has been the best player in the NBA ever since he quit his job at Goldman Sachs, joined the 76ers, and revived his basketball career!
