A StOry THroUGh MuSIC

Have you ever attended a musical production? Where there is nothing but music that tells a story. I recently attended a show like that last semester and thought that I’d take music and create a story. This assignment said to use new and old music to create a story but to avoid the SoundCloud police I used instrumentals. I copied and pasted a bunch of different sounds into audacity and created a story called broke music box. In the beginning , the music box is playing nicely along with the music but the music box gets broken in the story and no longer functions well. I wanted to use this as symbolism for a tarnished innocence. In the back you can also hear birds that get silenced when the music box is broken. Listen down below.

STORY TIME

For this assignment, I had to create a story and read it. So I decided to think about a story prompt that my character would come up with and put it into an AI generator. to get an idea of a story. I then edited it to make it seem more natural and like a children’s story. I then put the final product in a text-to-voice generator and selected a feminine voice.

A morning in Marie’s life☀️✨

Behind the creation: For this assignment, I wanted to give you guys a little look at Marie’s life in the morning from coffee to her nap before work! I want to start by saying that this didn’t come out how I expected at all… I struggled to find sounds to use. IF I had the time, I would have recorded my own, but unfortunately, my schedule doesn’t allow for that. I will probably revisit this if I have more time later down the line. It was really fun mashing together different sounds and I enjoyed this! I have learned that with audio assignments that it goes faster for me if I go through and brainstorm all the sounds that I want incorporated, search them up, and then drop them directly into audacity. Then I start with my “starting sound(s)” and solo them so that I can only hear them, and adjust them as need be. I do this with all my sounds adding them slowly until I get the finished product!

Daily Create Roundup: Week 4

Here are my daily creates for week 4!

I couldn’t think of any message for the world to put on my plane banner, so I decided to advertise the class instead.

The next create was to write a three line poem about lemons without using the following words: lemon, yellow, round, fruit, citrus, tart, juicy, peel, and sour.

Sunshine buddies on a twig
Can’t resist the urge of it
Bite in and it just might sting

Added a little rhyme to it and I was pretty proud of it!

Finally I shared a secret hideout, this one was from the SMT series games.

Looks eerie, the space saucer circular thingies resemble a space station, so I hypothesized that they’re a portal to somewhere in space.

half-baked radio show ideas

My course character Andrea has a bit of a backstory already but leaves enough open for a lot of different radio show ideas.

A lot of my ideas are centered around Georgia (Sydney Says Things’ character) since we made them together as almost 2 sides of the same coin. Things we could do would be an informative ad for the company they work for, guest interviews of the two talking about office life, or even just a segment where they talk about their past which likely just turns into a long-winded argument.

I could also do a radio show about the company we created Aggressive Technologies, a software company that Andrea works at. This could either be a reality TV setting where other course characters talk about their experiences, either from working there and giving us an inside look, office drama told dramatically, customers airing their grievances, or just a random character that has loose ties somehow.

Andrea could also be in a radio show as herself, the social butterfly who everyone flocks to. People are drawn to her because she exudes confidence, always knows what to do, has infinite connections, and the luck that seems to follow her as things seem to almost magically happen in her favor. The same people are also blind to her often self-centered behaviors, mistake the influence she has as her own and not her parents, and her instinct to crush those in her path. I can imagine Andrea on a radio show about the social scene of New York, a tell-all about her influential family (I have some potential stories for them), or a talk show with her and other course characters that flesh well together.

Daily Creates!

these are the daily Creates I did for the week! I was a bit picky this week because one of the daily creates confused me a bit so I did the “message in the sky”, “silk drawing”, and “secret enterance.”

for the plane, I literally had no clue what i would have said but if I had the money to put a message up, I think I would just pull a prank where it just says “ahhhh” as if the plane is screaming.

I also did the Silk Drawing one and I was just messing around and it started to look like a butterfly so I continued the butterfly idea.

The last one I did was the secret entrance. I just thought if you fell down that hole that you would fall and see a long cave hallway. It also gave me Game of Thrones dungeon vibes.

I think the daily creates are a easy assignment and I do actually enjoy doing them! I just get very cluttered with all the blog posts I have to do and this just feels like a factory reset for this class, almost like its the only thing I am confident I am doing correctly.

Radio Bumper and Radio Show Ideas!

I am not sure if I was supposed to do it in the beginning of the week to hear it on the ds106 radio but I with personal reason I was only able to start it on Wednesday. I wasn’t sure what I had wanted to do so I did what I would want for a radio bumper for my own show!

This is the bumper I had created! I wanted to use a little easter egg for any swifties out there! I wanted to add “are you ready for it” because when I was making the bumper, it was around the grammys and I thought she would be announcing Reputation (tv) but she dropped a NEW album!! She is also a big impact in my life as we can probably tell. I think for my idea for a radio show, having Taylor Swift as the bumper just makes total sense! my radio show idea is also an all female music to empower women. Sometimes women just want to listen to something more empowering to them and not so much rap and country. With everything going on, having female artists shine as their rights are stripped is a really strong idea. With Roe v Wade, I feel like there is a new wave a feminism going around and with the NFL’s fragile masculinity I think an all female artist station can be refreshing!

overall, I hope I am able to combine the radio bumper assignment and my radio show idea into one blog post to make my mind a lot less cluttered with all the different blog posts we have to do!

Wrapping up week four

Hello fellow students! In the beginning of the week I honestly wasn’t sure how I felt about the audio assignments. Having to watch tutorials, download more apps, and get the hang of using more platforms took a second to really get the hang of! At first, I wasn’t quite comfortable using Audacity but after playing around with the platform and getting familiar it got a bit easier and I used Audacity for all three of my audio assignments. I enjoyed doing the audio assignments the most this week because it was fun creating stories without sound and having the ability to let the creative juices flow.

Another aspect of this week that I appreciated was re connecting with radio. I said in my audio reflections blog post that I am someone that does enjoy the radio, but I dent go out of my way to listen to it much. I love the streaming music platform Spotify and that’s what I listen to my music on as well as listen to podcast. I was able to step back again and appreciate what radio has to offer the world. Connection, creativity, inspiration, different perspectives. The radio offers us so much that I honestly forgot about this week was nice being able to connect with something that I hadn’t thought about in a while. If you haven’t already be sure to check out some of my work below! Until next week fellow students.

Creating Daily, What Is Free Time?

This week we were assigned to do 3 daily creates. As I have said before, I think these are really fun and love seeing what new thing pops in every day. Even if I don’t do them, I appreciate the uniqueness of the projects.

Th first one this week was to write a 3-line poem about lemons without using the words: lemon, yellow, round, fruit, citrus, tart, juicy, peel, and sour. My thought process immediately went to riddle because they tend to follow those kinds of guidelines. So, I wrote a lemon riddle.

The next one was to show a picture of the one-armed, half-brained, miniature version of what you do. So essentially you are showing a thing you do to be creative but in the smallest capacity you are able. I mean, I have 2 small kids (4 and 7) and I rarely get to paint any of my miniatures. So, I posted an AI pic of that. I have been painting the same army for over 6 years and am not even close to being done. Here is the post:

And the las one was to use the app Silk and trying your hand at making some art with it. It’s simple enough, essentially a digital spirograph type thing and you can change all sorts of reflection designs. Anyway, here is my fly:

Anyway, I had a fun week. I really liked the silk app and even got my kids to mess around with it. They also enjoy it a lot. I also now want to get back to painting my mini army. I have all the supplies, just not enough time in the day. Being a full time Government employee at the Pentagon, taking 4 classes at UMW, and being a dad when I’m not doing those, my time is VERY limited. when you start working and have a family, the time for yourself gets smaller and smaller. Enjoy it now young people!

Smooth Synth Beats

So, for my third assignment I decided to do Chrome Music Labs. I had my daughter sit next to me and help me choose the notes (colors) to make our slick beat. She thought mine didn’t have enough pink, so I had her do her own as well. Below are the results of Tyler and Robin’s new tracks.

This was the one I did. I liked it when it repeated, but I can’t seem to figure out how to make it do that here.

This is my Daughter Robin’s song. She decided she liked the marimba sound better than the synth. Robin named hers “Smooth Shells”.

Overall, this is a really neat program taking me back to the days of OG garage band but much simpler. I also decided to do this because I haven’t done one with music yet. I also decided to go with synth sounds because I believe that is what my character would listen to. Being so invested in the cyber world and with AI, I just imagine him listening to “cyber” music.
