DS106 Radio Session

I was able to make it to the 1st night of group radio listening. I have listened to vintage radio shows before, so I did have an idea on what to expect. We listen to “Do androids dream of electric sheep” It was a great story. They made great use of the sounds to let you know where the characters were at any given point. They sounded different in the car then they did in a big empty space. There were footsteps and paper shuffling. I was unable to make it to the 2nd installment of the story and listened to it on my own. In the 2nd half of the story a famous painting is described and then the painting is used a reference to explain and describe the scene. The painting used was Edvard Munch “the Scream”. The music and sound effects did a great job of painting the scene as gritty and post-apocalyptic sci-fi.

On Wednesday we listened to 2 shorter programs. The first was “A Logic named Joe”. It was cartoonish and silly but with a sense urgency. It made use of cartoonish transition music. You got the idea that the characters were in quite a pickle but in a fun way. You could tell when they were on the phone with a person by the way they distorted the other voice slightly. At one point a kid is slapped and you just have to catch it with the sound effects since they don’t out right say it.

The other program was more serious in nature with less music. It was called “Report on the Barnhouse Effect”. Some ties the scenes faded into each other and other times there was transition music. The radar sound effect noise sounded like old school call waiting beeping. The sound effects were not silly like in Joe. They were much more serious. The music was simple and eerie chords. It really built suspense. Near the end a gun (I think they might have said pistol) was being fired and it was machine gun sounds. I laughed because the sound did not match what was described. (I grew up with a parent in the military and married a veteran of the armed forces) The sounds used really carried the story along providing information.

Audio Assignment 2 Week 4

For my second Audio Assignment this week I chose to complete the Consult with your Doctor assignment. I had Dr. Ravioli ask fellow Dr. Oblivion what his favorite color was since Dr. Ravioli is such an avid orange lover. I used https://www.naturalreaders.com/online/ to create Dr. Raviolis voice so he could ask Dr. Oblivion directly. Dr. Ravioli enjoys Dr. Oblivions presence and will continue to get to know him and will try his best to convert him into an orange lover.

Spooky Dialogue – Creepy Dr O

I used some audio from Dr Oblivion and had some fun with it. The words I isolated and played with are AI, do, need, and or take them. I layered this in with sounds from Freedsound.

This clip I made makes me think of a poltergeist. Take them! Not sure what Doctor Oblivion wants to take but there it is.

Audio Assignment 1 Week 4

This week I chose to complete the audio assignment Chrome Music Labs. and since we had to incorporate our characters in these assignments I gave Dr. Ravioli the credit for making this beautiful master piece. Dr. Ravioli thinks this song really speaks to his heart. He is constantly moving fast and the the three beats in the middle represents his 36 ex wives hindering him from his master mind genius. He is loud and proud and thinks this song really shows his true colors… Orange. He used this site to create the beautiful song chords.

Sound Effect Story

For week four we were tasked with creating a sound effect story. I decided to go with a thriller type story where an office building catches fire and one of the office workers tries to put it out but to no avail. This took a very long time to complete but was very fun to experiment with. I think I definitely need to learn how to use Audacity more effectively but I think I am getting the hang of it. My sound story can be accessed below. I did realize once I finished it that it has words in it but it it very short and I wasn’t sure how to fix it without having to redo the entire thing. I used sounds from http://freesound.org which was super easy to get the hang of.

Ds106 Radio Bumper

For this week I was tasked with creating a radio bumper for the Ds106 radio. I decided it would be funny to impersonate Jennifer Coolidge for this. My radio bumper can be accessed Below. This was a really fun experience and I got to learn more about using Audacity and got to practice using my Jennifer Coolidge voice which might still need some work.

Revisiting Course Goals!

One of the tasks that we were assigned with this week was to go back and look at the course goals that we blogged about in the opening weeks of the course and reflect on how we are doing in terms of achieving those goals. We needed to look back at what we wrote and attempt to explain if we are on the right track with completing them, or if we needed to try and change course a little bit to meet those goals. One of the first things that I said in my course goals post was the course would very interesting in terms of the information we gain and the assignments we do, and I can confidently say that that statement as true. I have enjoyed all of the assignments we have done thus far and I expect that trend to continue till the end of the course. One of my goals this semester was to create various pieces of work and then explain the thought process that went into them and why each assignment was done the way it was. Once again, I think I am doing a good job in terms of achieving this goal with every post that I make because I give the audience a final product, along with the thought process that went behind to explain why I did what I did for each assignment. So, from the course goals that I wrote about in the past, I am on track and intend to keep it that way. Another goal that I had was to show my creative skills to others in the class. With each assignment that I do, I take the time to think about the different ways that I can approach these assignments and how I can make them unique. By doing this, it allows me to be more engaged and creative with my work which I think I have done a good job with over the course of the last couple weeks. From my main post, “My main goal is create multiple works of digital art that are creative and intriguing while also explaining my thought process along the way so that others can understand the story behind the works of art.” This is the main goal that I had and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I have been doing a good job in terms of maintaining and achieving that goal. I feel like I am on track with my goals and i would not change anything because I made my goals a little difficult but still within my limits and by making it such a broad goal, almost anything I do in this course would apply to that goal as long as it is creative, thoughtful, and intuitive. Now that I have a better feeling for the course, I am in a routine when it comes to getting my work done and I am doing it efficiently and with time as well. I enjoy reading the assignments and coming up with different approaches to that assignment and finally settling on the best choice. So far, the course as been great and I expect these same trends to continue throughout the rest of this course.

ds106 radio show indoctrination: a bumper

I didn’t have much of an idea of what to do for the assignment so I asked Dr. Oblivion really nicely and here’s what he said.

Following his instructions I then looked through Freesound for fun jingles to use that fit the theme of AI and decided on this one LoveOnRadio. I thought the electronic music and catchy tune worked well.

For the informative bit of the bumper I wanted to use Dr. Oblivion so I sent him this request: Can you say these things for me? “This is the ds106 radio show where we can all sit down and discuss important topics like AI usage and its place in our world, different forms of media production, and much more. Tune in now!” And of course, being Dr. Oblivion, he added some edits to my script to make it his own which was kind of him since he’s so busy these days.

Finally, I imported both files into Audacity, adjusted volume levels, trimmed them down, and added a fade to the end. I would definitely listen to this show.
