1.Reporting from the scene.
The Terminator – Police Station Shootout
The Terminator – Tech Noir Scene(1984) Retro Sci Fi Horror
Imagine how these incidents would be reported in a local newspaper – either traditional or online. “Shootout at the Santa Monica Police Station,” the headline might read, with photos of destruction, crazy eyewitness reports, an official spokesperson denying any connection to an earlier shooting. There’d probably be a side article about the nightclub shooting.
Your mission is to take a scene from one of the tech-noir/cyberpunk videos you watched and envision how it would be reported as a news event. Look for ways to use a variety of media. If you’re adventurous, you could set up a subdomain with a news theme – you can find free ones. There are also Canva templates for news sites and newspapers. You can find others through Google. The point of this exercise is to put some of the tools you’ve used so far to use in a focused and creative way. There is no length requirement. Just have fun with it and make something you are proud of. Link or embed it in a blog post that includes your creative processes and thoughts on the project and tag it technoirnews.
2 Your choice
a. Design some propaganda. This could be a poster, postcard, bumper sticker, web meme, or something else. Be sure to use design elements like imagery, type, color, shape, etc. to convey an emotional appeal
Examples: Keep Calm and Carry On
Examples: Rosie the Riveter
Do not feel limited by these examples. They’re just the first two things I grabbed from Wikipedia. Put your design in a blog post with the usual write-up, but also tell the story of how it connects with your character. Tag the post psa-propaganda.
OR
b. Create a Public Service Announcement: This could be audio or video, but either way should both voice and background sounds. Tech Noir tends to present a dystopian view of where we might be going. A PSA may offer a warning about this. It could also promote a different path – tech blanc, if that’s a thing. Or maybe your character wants a dystopia, and puts out a PSA embracing the dark side.
Examples:
Commercials 21: Public Service Announcements
Old Radio OTR Public Service Announcements

Again, do not feel limited by these examples. They’re just the first things I found in the Internet Archive.
Good ways to find background music that you can use without running into copyright issues are to use CC Search or to google open source music. Embed your PSA in a blog post with the usual write-up, but also tell the story of how it connects with your character. Tag the post psa-propaganda.
3. Complete 3 Daily Creates: You must complete at least three daily creates this week. Make sure you also blog your TDCs.
4. Commenting: In addition to the usual commenting, do a blog post about how your character would react to a few of the designs and PSAs that the rest of the class produces. Make sure your post links to the source posts so people get pingbacks. Tag this post reaction.
5. Voting. Once again, vote for this week’s Best of ds106 Be #4life and show the love!
6. Weekly Summary: You all know what this is.
