Moon Graffiti – The Truth

by Andrew Johnson

The “Moon Graffiti” audio recording represented a deep underlying barrier of suspense and excitement to listeners. I enjoyed the dialogue between Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin because it made me think of how the world would be changed if they never made it home. How would space exploration be continued? Would NASA and other top-tier space programs change how they viewed space and visitation to the moon? Although this disaster never took place, the recording does allow us to raise some of these questions. The suspense of the story allowed me to keep being intrigued, wanting to know more about the plot. In conclusion, I liked this piece of fictional storytelling and do recommend listeners tune in to this program.

The Sounds of Report on the Barnhouse Effect

As I listen to Report on the Barnhouse Effect on the DS106radio I noticed sounds played a huge role throughout the track. For example, there is a scene where a typewriter can be heard being used. This tells me this track took place in an older time frame. There also is a lot of buildup sounds being incorporated to build suspense as we the audience don’t know what is coming next. Another sound aspect I noticed was a beeping sound. The sound started off slow and progressively got faster and faster until the stopped completely. I think this worked well with building tension within the scene. I definitely felt a little tense listening to the beeping sound get louder and faster. Other small sound details almost made you feel like you were in the story. For example, the sound of the door creaking, footsteps, chair creaking, etc… Overall, I enjoyed listening to the Report on the Barnhouse Effect and it was great seeing what others had to say about the story in the discord.

DS 106 Radio: It’s What You Need

Here is my simple DS106 radio bumper. First time using audacity so I only layered a couple things into it, but I messed with volume and some other settings to see what I could do. Might use a different mic next time because the clarity is meh at best.

I am really enjoying working with audio. I remember the good ole days when garage band first came out and just messing around in it all day. I’ll say that those feelings are coming back. I can’t wait to possibly hear it on the DS106 radio station!

Audio Reflections

Im gonna be honest here I dont listen to the radio much anymore. Its not because I dont enjoy radio, in fact theres a few radio segments that I love and when im in office and hear the segments I always make sure that I am fully aware and paying attention. I’m some one that’s all about my Spotify playlist and podcast and that’s been my vibe over the years.

After doing the course work for this week and listening to Jad Abumrad video about “How radio creates empathy” I have a newfound view of radio. He pointed out in his video the immediacy and connection that radio offers and how one can feel like there being directly spoken to and that’s something that resonated with me. He also mentioned how everyone’s always says, “radio is played out” and how “radio should have been played out years ago”. I know I’ve heard that before and I am someone that doesn’t go out of the way to listening to the radio but whenever I do, I always enjoy listening and find myself excited to hear about the next story and segments. Radio can truly become a part of someone’s routine and a connection can be built from radio.

I think the Moon Graffiti podcast did a good job at making you feel like you were really there. Between the creepy music and all of the different sounds you heard. It’s easy to imagine it all playing it out in your head like your actually there. Which I think is the whole point. Using your voice and sound to paint the image in your head and they did exactly that.

Weekly Summary:wk 4

This week assignments was fun for me, I enjoyed creating audio clips and the sound effect story was probably my favorite assignment. I was glad that I was able to expand my knowledge on sounds and how they really have a big impact on how we envision the stories within our minds. I loved when we tuned in on Monday for our radio show I was able to watch the story display in my mind. Our class radio show, played “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” it was about a post-apocalyptic San Francisco after a nuclear war. During the story you could really vision where they are by the background noises. Such as, having a humming ventilator in the background and by the way the chacters voices echo it sounded like they were in a small room. With the Radio Bumper I was able to create a radio audio clip and I used an ai voice generator and used some free music audio clips to add it all together and I loved how my results came back.

Building a Scene Through Audio – ds106radio

Yesterday, I listened to the ds106radio playing an adaptation of a Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep? and it was actually, really really interesting.

I found myself a lot more focused on how the sound made the scene instead of the actual scene, so I don’t think I could tell you exactly what was going on. I think it was a lot about the humanization of androids in this dystopian world and the uncertainty of knowing whether someone was or was not an android. For the bits that I did pick up, it was very interesting.

My favorite things were the little things in the background that set the scene, that allowed you to imagine what was happening: the click of a cup on a table, the rustling of furniture, as if someone was shifting their weight or taking off a coat, the click of buttons on an intercom or on a flashlight. I think my utmost favorite was when two of the characters were speaking in what I assumed to be an alleyway, both of their voices echoing, and you could tell one of them was further based on their voice having more echo. It was such a little detail, but it added distance and depth and was just so cool to me.

There was also, in more intense scenes, heavy white noise in the background that stayed and got more intense as the scene got heightened. I thought that was really cool, because it definitely made me feel tensed up. The scenes went from being calm to heavy all of a sudden, and I wish I had a better way to explain what “heavy” looks like in audio, but I don’t know how to explain it. A lot of white noise, I guess, that’s loud and constant without fluctuation. It wasn’t an environmental sound, it was almost like it was just in my head, just there to build tension. The characters didn’t see it, it was just for the audience.

There also was a sound that played between scenes, almost like a little cutscene that helped transition into the real one. I don’t really remember what it sounded like, but I thought that was helpful to understand where one scene ended and the next began without being able to actually see it.

Overall, I thought this was so cool. I wish more people were in the Discord, because I would’ve loved to also hear their thoughts and what they had picked up on, but regardless, I was amazed and impressed by this.
