Seeing through Sound?

In my opinion, sound is a very important concept of storytelling. It can provoke any emotion, establish a setting, create suspension, advance a story’s plot develop characters, etc. Throughout the audio of “Moon Graffiti,” there is a lot of background audio for us to get a visual of the story that is being told. When the spaceship crashed we heard a tense sound to create tension, to make us be on the edge of our seats to wonder if they survived or want to know what happened. The two Radio Lab YouTube videos discuss audio storytelling and how people can tell stories without needing pictures or written words. Jad Abumrad mentions his version of storytelling, he uses his “voice”, he mentions he’s not comfortable doing that, so he uses audio clips to create the illusion that he is using his “voice” being able to capture the audience by sound and giving them the paintbrush to imagine the story is something magical, similar to putting the individual in a dream state mind. Jad Abumrad mentions that fewer images can be better for the audience because it influences the imagination that comes from the lack of images and abundance of sounds. Without images or written words, you can allow your voice/sounds to express a story in order to make the audience create the images in their mind, creating a sense of intimate connection with the storyteller.

While listening to the Moon Graffiti, I started to acknowledge that what Jad Abumrad mentioned in the video was correct. Listening to this audio clip I felt like I was able to watch them in a movie and feel their emotions. With the different audio and sounds playing while the story was being told it felt like I was in a dream state of mind, it felt like an eerie situation I was in. When they both went out of the ship to take pictures, I vividly could imagine them using their camera and seeing the flash every time I heard the click of the shutter going off. In addition, at the end of the audio with them reporting that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were not coming back to earth, it felt real, with radio static and the voice of the reporter, it created an unsettling mood and atmosphere, with the eerie audio playing behind his voice.

Weekly Summary 3

This week I quite enjoyed doing the assignments, I felt like I was able to express myself more on these assignments. My favorite video that we were assigned to watch was “How Stranger Things Got Its Retro Title Sequence” I find it pretty interesting that they used a similar style to R/Greenberg Associates like how they used in the ’70s and ’80s. I find it cool that we still use stuff that was created in the ’80s for such an iconic show. As well as, watching the whole process that they created the title sequence. At first, using the AI generator I was confused about how to make the assignment but I checked out some of my classmates’ work, which was very helpful. I liked using the AI generator applications because I felt like I was able to expand my knowledge on how to work those types of applications, and what to expect. Such as using Stable Diffusion, was fun for me. I enjoyed creating an image for my character Dolly, I enjoyed being able to see her come to life.

Assignment Banks: Event Poster

For this assignment I created a poster/flyer for a upcoming event, which could be for any event such as a car show, comedy show, concert, etc. I created a flyer for a comedy show using Adobe Express. I used fun colors to catch the readers attention and I wanted it to look like a retro aesthetic.

Generated Art: Micheal Jackson

This week’s assignment is from Middlebury College and we were assigned to use AI generators to create images. I used two of the applications that were given to us the Stable Diffusion and Craiyon . I attempted to take this assignment slowly, to better understand it. This exercise has helped me get thinking about the implications of creating images using AI. I was attempting to make a simple and easy prompt for the AI generator to create a simple image. Which was Micheal Jackson in 2024 walking in the streets of New York. As a result, I got two very different images when both generators created this AI image. On the left side, Stable Diffusion was on point of creating what I asked for. I was expecting the AI generator to create Micheal Jackson as an elder when I asked the AI. As well as, his outfit I didn’t specify what he should be wearing. You can oblivious see by his facial structure is clear and it looks identical to Micheal Jackson. Unlike the Crayon it did not create Micheal Jackson accurately. His facial structure is off as well and his hands are not formed correctly. His fingers on his left hand are coming from both ends of his hand and his right hand seems to be meshed with something else. In addition, he has a red glowing aura background almost like the AI didn’t register the location.

Photoblitzer Wk 3

Task 1: Take a picture featuring rope or knots. For this task I used a cable that was already bundled up.

Task 2: Sometimes a perfection is the enemy. Take a photo that represents a beautiful mess. For this tasked I took a photo of my area that Im doing this assignment right now.

task 3: Someone else artwork in an interesting way to make it yours. For this task I went to the library on campus and took a picture of someone else work and tweaked it to make it mine.

task 4: take a photo using a camera setting that you are unfamiliar with. For this task I used a different camera setting called Pano where I can take turn in a almost 360 to take a picture of the area.

Task 5: Make it green: green sleeves, green with envy, green eggs and hams. For this task I walk around the library trying to find anything with a bunch of green.

Task 6: Make a photo that emphasizes one color much more than any others in the shot. This task I used the blue wall which stands out in the study room, which is the only blue wall.

Task 7: Take a photograph of a spinning object, frozen motion or blurred. This tasked I spun an chair in place.

Here I have the list of the code for these task:

  • Take a picture featuring rope or knots.
  • Sometimes perfection is the enemy. Take a photo that represents a beautiful mess.
  • Someone else’s artwork in an interesting way to make it yours.
  • Take a photo using a camera setting that you are unfamiliar with.
  • Make it green: green sleeves, green with envy, green eggs and ham.
  • Make a photo that emphasises one color much more than any others in the shot
  • Take a photograph of a spinning object, frozen motion or blurred.

Reflections: Designthoughts

I find it interesting that books, art, and film use certain colors and words to express the certain situation they want to display to the audience. The color schemes are a big part of advertising, to increase the movie-goers to go watch it in theaters. For instance, James Verdesoto is a movie poster artist and has been doing it for over 30 years. In the video, he talks about the colors on certain posters that can target and influence the audience to watch that movie. Such as the Red and White scheme is a trend that is traditionally used to market comedies to a mainstream audience. The white background is to get the audience to focus on the action that is happening in the main photograph. Making the viewer engage with the poster as they receive little background information from the movie. It looks professionally taken within a studio. Using specific clothing colors, objects, and negative white spaces to make the viewer understand the message that is being sent by the poster. With a frame around the poster and an object coming outside of the frame, gives the illusion that the action is coming out. Another example of color that is used as a Thriller poster is the color blue. Displaying blue and yellow shows more action. As well as, technological film shows more blue yellow and green. this trend started to become popular from the John Grisham novels in the 90s. I find it really interesting that there is a lot of thought process and time spent on creating a poster to target the audience that enjoys certain types of films.

The Stranger Things introduction is an amazing intro for the show. It fits perfectly with the show. Imaginary Forces took their time to create the intro to make it feel original and it only matched with the show. The font is called ITC Benguiat, created in 1978 by a jazz percussionist-turned-designer named Ed Benguiat. This typeface was used in books in the ’80s- ’90s such as “Choose Your Own Adventure” and the Smiths album “Strangeways”  I find it really cool that they use the imperfections of the letters, to recreate that gritty look. They used Kodaliths which is an old film format that produces a really high contrast on the images. To give off an original feeling of its from that time period.

Assignment Bank Wk:2

For this assignment I used an AI photo application which was Adobe Express. I used only that application because I was familiar with it. I was able to change the gradient and the contrast to give off that blue tint and deliver that futuristic energy through the poster. That allowed me to edit and create a futuristic city. Lastly I added letters on the top of the city to represent similar colors that city is displaying.

Assignment Bank: Destination Poster

For this assignment I used the same application the Adobe Express. I was able to use their new feature with the Ai generator tool and I added more people around the main character and I added text for the location.

Re-Written: Al Film Review

Artificial intelligence enhances humanity lifestyle so much that we start to trust it with our whole life and expect to experience life even greater than before. With the help of AI it can assist mundane and repetitive tasked so we can have more free time. As well as having it to assist us in difficult situations that no human can with stand in. With the help of Dr. Oblivion, it mention that AI algorithm can use to analysis a great mass of data that can help them better understand the causes and affects of certain situations. In Addition AI drones can be sent out to see the impact that has happen to the ecosystems. With this data already in their system they can generate a better resolution for certain situations than what humans can do. The Film I am Mother is based on a extinction even, taking place in a bunker that was created with advance technology. An AI Robot named Mother grows and natures a embryo to repopulate humanity activities. The Mother AI was able to nurture a baby while being in a middle of the mass extinction, with the mass data that she was programed to understand humans it was able to raise the child as a human being. At the end of the movie, it showed that the Mother AI was having other AI robots analyzing the outside world to collect data and being able to exam the affect that the mass extinction has taken on the world.
