In listening to these experts explain their processes in designing covers and posters, I was constantly thinking about schemas and archetypes. I’m a psychology major so everything I see is processed a manner of behavior to me. When listening to the movie poster designer I was thinking about the psychology of colors, laws of attraction, attention seekers, etc. The covers and posters of these pieces of entertainment, which are art themselves, have to be a correct depiction of what it contains, but also yank attention and potential viewing. If you can portray symbols that have common meaning to people they will come, but also you can follow strategies like depicting taboo topics or risky vulnerabilities. And if all that fails you can just put pictures of beautiful women half naked, and men will go and see it (a sad truth lol.) Nonetheless, that still is a symbol that attracts humans. This art may be visual, but it ultimately must attract behavior by depicting the summary of the contents within the book or movie or whatever piece of entertainment and that is why it is so important.

Week 2: Can’t Accomplish Without Purpose
I am an honest person so I will easily admit that I had a hard time this week in this class. I started off the week sick and didn’t check ds106’s home page until Wednesday so I missed the all the daily creates up to then and didn’t see the point in doing the others. Then on Thursday I had my call with Bond and Groom and really saw the vision and purpose for this course. I wasn’t expecting anything and had no clue what to expect but they gave me a real vision and purpose behind each assignment, which I really appreciated. I then got excited to complete assignments this week. I attempted the assignment bank, but I really am not good at this stuff so learned that I am going to head to the DKC for help for that. I had fun creating my character, commenting on some posts about other’s characters, and talking a lot with Dr. Oblivion. He made me feel intelligently inferior very fast. I redid my movie review with him, and it felt better than my last one for sure. It was a hard week for me, but I don’t see it getting worse from here on out for me in this course now that I understand the main goals of this course.
Movie Redo-view with Dr. Oblivion: The Creator
The creator was a thought-provoking movie that explores the hubris of humanity and the potential consequences of playing with nature. We witness a scientist’s ethical boundaries dissolve in trying to bring life to lifeless beings. Hollywood is dramatic and likes to portray AI as a power-hungry force trying to dominate and destroy humanity while real AI is a tool that can be used for good, but it also depends on how we choose to use it. Reviewing The Creator is a great exercise in understanding how far we can take AI to its worse, but right now it is almost harmless. Dr. Oblivion and I kept agreeing on the importance of human connection that absolutely cannot be lost because traits like empathy are only developed through real human connections. AI is a fantastic tool for learning, but I think after watching The Creator and seeing AI children, we can see that in children development of humans there needs to be real connection and real experiences, not with technology.
In my original review I also went over some religious parallels in the movie that couldn’t go without addressing but Dr. Oblivion didn’t care to comment on them as it was not his expertise.
Techno Optimist vs. The Creator
I really enjoyed the Techno-Optimist point of view, but it was clearly very bias to me. Technology is invention, and invention is part of evolution in order to grow and adapt. Part of those consequences have been the loss of jobs, the corruption of children due to sticking an iPad in their face, and at times polluting the environment. Those are not lies, just like it’s not lies that technology has given us all that we utilize to make life easier and better. I view it as simply the tradeoff of growth, therefore it must be monitored (“it” being technology). The advance of technology must not be held in the hands of technology, but in ours. In comparing it to the movie I reviewed, The Creator, the balance of the two views can be seen. As ai in the movie is the thing that destroyed the world, can also be the one that can save it. Dr. Oblivion very much agreed with me as well. His main point was that humans must do two things: stay educated so we do not lose control of the ai technology and also stay connected to each other. Dr. oblivion advised that we weigh the potential consequences of advancing technology before we use it and I couldn’t agree more.
