Week 3 Article Reflection

After reading the article and watching the videos linked it was interesting to see the change in perspective and development that I was able to have. It took me while to understand what was wrong with the photo of the lady, I thought that it was normal for a mirror to show different angles. I think that highlighted just how much previous experiences impact the way we view life today. In addition to this learning about how movie posters are constructed was interesting. Unlike a book, movie posters are meant to be judged. Being able to learn how colors are chosen was interesting because everything is calculated even if you think something as color is quite fickle. In addition to this, learning about the color trends like white backgrounds being used for marketing strategy because the photo can be recreated easily, or action movies having a man running in them made me want to pay more attention to the posters I see.

Week 2 Summary

This week I am finding my footing with the structure and topic of this class as well as trying to get WordPress to work in the ways I want. All my issues are with WordPress and my inability to understand how the system works, I want to add specific pages that are different to the main one and add them in the heading however I can’t seem to figure that out. I wanted to change my URL name however I was also not able to do that. Hopefully Everything will work out, I just don’t want my website to be ugly.

I think I am understanding the importance of learning about the tech-noir genre and it has made me look at reality a little differently. A lot of movies assumed that we would have been further along with technology however we are in a completely different stage of progress. I think we aren’t using technological advances in ways that are actually beneficial instead we are making deepfakes of celebrities. For this reason I enjoyed the, The Judgement of Thamus reading. As a philosophy major, it is often disheartening when people do not consider the importance of writing from humanity. Being able to create ideas within the mind is a craft that everyone has the ability to do but not even can do it well. And as more people start using chat GPT for basic writing it is often exhausting, I just want people to enjoy writing and reading because it is important as they shape the perspective of society. In spiteof this I know there are ways that AI and other technological advances are beneficially however, using it as a basic writing tool or a search engine for your grocery list is a waste of a machine.

In addition to this, this week I tested out Dr Oblivion which was really cool. At first I was skeptical because I do not enjoy using AI, but knowing that it was actually made by a person spurred me to give it a chance. Last semester I made a dancing pickle that would answer questions, even though my questions were not as complex and my pickle was not as intelligent.

As an indecisive person trying to find the right assignment bank post of the week to create was difficult, there were so many I wanted to do however I am happy with what I was able to do. The first activity I chose was to write about a song and I wanted to relate it to the teme so i chose Technologic, which is a really good song in my opinion. There were no alterior notives when chosing the song, I just went through spotify and chose something that spoke to me. The second one I did was create a gif, which I also related to the theme (if I did not relate it to the theme it would have been fantastic mr fox or shark tales). I think fight club is a great comentary on the canibalistic tendancies that come with the desire to ugrade humanity and eventually lossing self identity. I had a really great time creating those as I was able to find a new song and understand how people made gifs. For my third and final post I wanted to use Canva because I love Canna as well as traveling which is why I created a flyer for the cliffs of mother which is in Ireland.

I am also really excited to see the potential of my new character who I chose to name Ladybird, I didn’t really think too much about what she would do and how she would exist however, I think she’d be pretty cool.

When doing my Blade Runner review the second time I wanted to speck about the importance of symbolism in the movie and the differences between class and structure as well as human and replicants.

In addition to my issues with WordPress, having to remember to do the daily creates is going to be a challenge but they are slowly becoming the best parts of my day because they are quite random.

Assignment Bank – Week 2

how does a song make you feel – writing assignment

Technologic by Daft Punk highlights explicitly the cycle and the damage within need to be the best or better. The opening line of the song “Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, trash it, change it, mail, upgrade it” 0:00 highlights the consistent cycle that ultimately eliminates itself as a system because people have come enthroned within a system that is fast passed and those who can not keep up are thrown aside.

Similarly, “Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it, snap it work it, quick, erase it” 0:03 highlights how something does not necessarily have to be bad for it to be thrown away, the purpose it had for the time was used and now once the person has used it it no longer benefits them people move on. During the SAG writer strike some production companies were working with AI to create scripts as opposed to paying their workers livable wages because it was easier. Within today’s society, it becomes easier to get a replacement that fixes the problem. The cycle is continuous within a society that revolves itself around capitalism, people are consistently looking for the next best thing or ways to erase what once was in place from what is now.

Say It Like The Peanut Butter – visual assignment

Although fight club is a commentary on the effects of consumer culture within society and the lack of identity that comes from a person living through their projects, I think that this can relate to tech-noir and the essence of humanity crumbling. This is because the building falling and another one simultaneously generating captures the essence of a world where robots are the ruling class. The two character who watch from the window have no real control its all lucrative and within a world where robots become the ruling class, the sanctity of human life will only be protected by what humanity is able to do with perception. A robot does not have the ability.

Film Review

Blade Runner 1982

I don’t really like dystopian movies however, I knew Blade Runner was a classic, I decided to watch it so I could talk to other people about it. Why watch a movie if I don’t have anyone to discuss it with? I took a film course a few semesters ago and watching this movie allowed me to use the knowledge of what I already knew. The way the scenes were light and the angles that were used for suspense or the close up shots that pulled you into each character made the movie enjoyable.

LA kind of looks like NYC which made me sick. I hate the idea of cities that are only large buildings, where are the TREES?

As a philosophy major I thought it was interesting to view this movie and its intersection with class and how class is often portrayed in media that focuses on the future. The “retiring of replicants” reminded me of the brave new world and the aspects of dystopian societies having the power to create an eliminated people they deem unnecessary. By Design replicants are there to be used, which is kind of what happens in society right now. They may not be robots per say but people who are poor are often put in compromising positions where they are chained to the system of capitalism that does not benefit them and that was by design.

The idea of replicants also reminds me of deep fakes today. The same way people struggles to identify replicants, people are consistently in this fight to understand and debunk what is and is not AI and though sometimes its self explanatory when things are and are not real it is scary to live in a word where my likeness can be used without my control against me. Also I love Harrison Ford.
